The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium (ASG) is a municipal Gymnasium of the city of Wolfsburg in the Westhagen district, founded in 1972; the first Abitur was taken here in 1979. It follows the Lower Saxony curriculum from grade 5 to 13 leading to the Abitur; since 2023 it has been an IB World School and, as the only school in Wolfsburg, offers the IB Diploma Programme in grades 12-13. German students normally gain a double qualification: IB courses are shared by IB and non-IB students and prepare for both the Abitur and the IB exams, which are mostly in English. For international students who have recently arrived in Germany and are still learning German, the IB Diploma can be the only qualification. From grade 5 there is a bilingual German-English profile: an extra English lesson, history and sport with English parts, and bilingual chemistry from grade 6. The school has long admitted children of employees temporarily posted to Wolfsburg and children without German: there are language learning classes and German as a second language lessons. It is a small Gymnasium; the 2021 school programme gives almost 600 students and 59 teachers, from about 30 nationalities.

About the fees The Gymnasium is a state school and tuition is free; the school states that as a public general school it charges no additional fee for the IB programme either. Families pay IB exam fees: about 600 EUR for the full diploma and 80-100 EUR per subject certificate, with a 100 EUR deposit towards exam fees on registration for the programme. IB textbooks are bought by the family, though most can be borrowed from the district library; textbooks for other grades are rented for a fee (80 EUR per year in grade 5), and the iPad in grade 11 is bought by the family.
Admissions Grade 5 registration is through the school using forms on the website; there is separate guidance for children from the Gifhorn and Helmstedt districts, and when places are short the school mentions a first registration round and a further round. The IB Diploma Programme (grades 12-13) is entered after grade 11 at this Gymnasium: the introductory grade 11 is compulsory for all and may be skipped only in exceptional cases, such as after a year abroad. Students from other schools must transfer to the ASG, ideally at the start of grade 11. Requirements for German students: successful completion of grade 11, English at least B1+, good grades in the chosen IB subjects, the bilingual profile in grade 11 or schooling abroad, a meeting with the IB coordinator and a 100 EUR deposit. International students need a school leaving certificate equivalent to the German Realschulabschluss (after grade 10); in grade 11 they study German as a second language and should reach A2/B1 German by grade 12, with English at least B1+; they need a plan for a literature course in their first language with a tutor. Places are limited, and each admission is approved by the IB coordinator and school management.
Stages and year groups Grades 5-13. A Lower Saxony Gymnasium (G9): lower secondary grades 5-10, grade 11 as the introductory year of the upper level, grades 12-13 as the qualification phase with the Abitur (Allgemeine Hochschulreife); all upper-level profiles of Lower Saxony are available through cooperation with the neighbouring Heinrich-Nordhoff-Gesamtschule. From grade 5 there is a bilingual German-English profile (history, sport, chemistry from grade 6), with bilingual history and chemistry in the upper level. The IB Diploma Programme in grades 12-13 since 2023, normally as a double qualification with the Abitur in shared courses: German A, English A or B, Mathematics (in German with an extra lesson in English), bilingual Chemistry and History, a sixth subject from Visual Arts, Theatre or Spanish B, plus TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS. International students follow a separate profile with German B (German as a second language, Higher Level) and a literature course in their first language as a school-supported self-taught course; for them the IB Diploma is the only qualification. Individual IB Course Certificates are also possible.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.
What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
