Amersfoort International School (AIS) is a small international primary school in Amersfoort for children aged 4 to 12, which opened in the 2023-2024 school year. It is state-funded: formally it is a department of Internationally-Oriented Primary Education (IGBO) linked to the Dutch primary school De Kubus, supervised by the Dutch Inspectorate, so its fees are much lower than those of private international schools. Since September 2025 AIS has been an authorised IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme. Teaching is in English, and Dutch is taught as an additional language from age 4: twice a week, while PE, playtime and some arts lessons are shared with Dutch peers from De Kubus. Classes are mixed-age: PYP 1-2, PYP 3-5 and PYP 6-8. Graduates usually continue at international secondary schools in the region, such as in Utrecht, Hilversum or Almere.

Admissions The school is state-funded and admits students under Dutch rules for international schools. A child may qualify if: the child has a non-Dutch nationality (or also a non-Dutch nationality) and one parent is working in the Netherlands or a Dutch border region for a period of time; or the child has Dutch nationality and has lived and attended school abroad for at least two years because a parent was working abroad; or the child has Dutch nationality and the parent the child lives with will be working abroad (supported by a written statement from the parent or employer). Whether the school is appropriate is determined by previous school reports, interviews, details of any Special Educational Needs and contact with previous schools; final admission is confirmed by the Head of School when a place is available. Applications are made online via OpenApply with a 250 EUR fee per family. Places are available in all grades. Children entering PYP 1 must be fully toilet trained.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end.

After school care until 18:30 and a preschool for ages 2-4 are run by partner Partou in De Kubus' other building on Spaarnestraat. Amersfoort Centraal station is 20 minutes' walk or bus 501. "Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
