Colegio Español María Reina is a private Catholic school in the Reñaca Alto district of Viña del Mar (Valparaíso region, Chile), from kindergarten (Educación Parvularia, from Pre-Kínder) to 8° Básico. The school opened on 3 March 1981 in what was then an undeveloped district without running water, sewerage or electricity; already in May 1981 its sister school Colegio Hispano Americano, offering technical and vocational secondary education, was created for the secondary level. On 17 February 2003, under an agreement between the Chilean and Spanish ministries of education, both schools became centres of «doble titularidad: chilena y española» (dual Chilean and Spanish status), and in the Spanish register they are listed in a single entry. Students count as students of both systems, and the school has its own approved curricula. The school is run by the Fundación Educacional María Reina; it is state-subsidised and takes part in the SEP programme (Subvención Escolar Preferencial - extra funding for students from vulnerable families). In 2025 it had 887 students at the start of the year (960 over the year) in 24 classes from Pre-Kínder to 8° Básico, 41 teachers, five managers and 39 support staff. Lessons run from 08:00 to 15:20 Monday to Wednesday and Friday, and until 13:00 on Thursday. The language of instruction is Spanish: all pages for parents, the regulations and the principal's report are written in it; English in the kindergarten follows the AMCO programme. There is a science laboratory, computer and music rooms, a library and 16 clubs.

Admissions As a subsidised private school, Colegio Español María Reina admits students only through the state Sistema de Admisión Escolar (SAE): under its regulation families apply on the single platform of the Chilean Ministry of Education, and the school itself «no puede aceptar postulaciones o reservar cupos» (cannot accept applications or reserve places). Outside the main periods places are allocated through the state waiting list «Anótate en la Lista». A student who studied from 7° Básico to 2° Medio can request the Spanish ESO certificate free of charge, and one who completed 1°-4° Medio the Spanish Bachillerato; María Reina itself ends at 8° Básico, and the secondary level is run by its sister school Colegio Hispano Americano.
Stages and year groups Grades Pre-Kínder - 8° Básico, 24 classes. Chilean curriculum: Educación Parvularia (Pre-Kínder and Kínder) and Educación Básica (1°-8° Básico), 24 classes in 2025; the school has its own curricula approved by Resolución Exenta Nº 4108 of 17 December 2003. The Spanish component follows the agreement between the Chilean and Spanish ministries of education of 17 February 2003, shared with Colegio Hispano Americano: «los estudiantes pasan a ser alumnos reconocidos tanto por el sistema educativo chileno como por el español» (students are recognised by both the Chilean and the Spanish system). A student who studied from 7° Básico (1° ESO) to 2° Medio (4° ESO) can request the Spanish «Título de la ESO» free of charge; those who complete 1°-4° Medio (3° ESO - 2° Bachillerato) can obtain the «Título de Bachillerato de España» and apply to universities in Spain and the European Union, or from Chile to the Spanish distance university UNED. María Reina itself ends at 8° Básico, so 1°-4° Medio are taken at Colegio Hispano Americano.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

MEFPD
Spain's state register of schools lists it in its "abroad" section as a school under an agreement with the ministry (Centro de Convenio en el Extranjero), code 60001443. In the register this is a single entry together with Colegio Hispano Americano: for Spain the two schools are one institution. María Reina runs the years up to 8° Básico; the Spanish ESO certificate is awarded at the end of 2° Medio, and the Bachillerato at Hispano Americano.

What stands behind each entry

MEFPDMinistry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports of Spain

A school of the Spanish education system abroad: run by the Spanish state, or a private Spanish school supervised by the ministry, or a school under an agreement with the ministry. The curriculum is Spanish, and leavers receive the Spanish certificate. Every such school is named in Spain's state register of schools, each with its own code.

What the badge means for this school. This is a Spanish school abroad, and that can be checked in Spain's state register. The entry is not a quality inspection: a school is on the register as part of the Spanish system, not as the outcome of an assessment. The curriculum and the certificate are Spanish. What other programmes the school offers, and what it charges, are on its own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

Spanish programme

The state school programme of Spain, with the Spanish certificates: ESO at 16 and the Bachiller after the baccalaureate.

What this means for this school. The programme is set by the Spanish Ministry of Education, which also names the school in its state register of schools, in the "abroad" section. Leavers receive Spanish qualifications: the Graduado en ESO after secondary school and the título de Bachiller after the baccalaureate. They are used for entry to Spanish universities; in other countries they are matched to local ones.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Exams and destinations from the school's official website

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
