The school works in Barão Geraldo, a district of Campinas next to the Unicamp university, and traces its history to 1863: it began as the Deutsche Schule, a German school opened by immigrant parents, in 1931 it brought together the two German schools of the city, and in 1938, under the requirement of nationalisation, it became Brazilian and took the name Escola Rio Branco Campinas. It calls itself one of the oldest secular schools in Brazil among those still working today. The school is maintained by Sociedade de Instrução e Leitura, a non-profit parents' society founded in that same year of 1863 by a union of German immigrants; parents of pupils become its members automatically, and the society is run by a general meeting, an advisory and an audit council and a board. The school moved to its present site in 1975, and at that time it had 125 pupils. The stages run from a pre-school group for two-year-olds to the third year of Ensino Médio, that is, to graduation. From the sixth grade and up to the second year of the senior stage the international line RB Currículo Internacional works: subjects in English on the Cambridge programme, two lines to choose from, natural sciences and Global Perspectives, entry requiring English at no lower than B1 and Cambridge certificates at the end. German and Spanish the school teaches free of charge: German from the senior grades of Ensino Fundamental and in Ensino Médio, Spanish only in the senior stage. The senior stage has eighteen electives of two hours a week, from public speaking and debating to scientific computation in Python and financial literacy, as well as field study trips in the first and the second year, an annual careers forum and support in choosing a profession. For the younger children the RB+ after-school programme works: from the pre-school stage to the seventh grade, six directions (entrepreneurship and sustainable development, sciences, games, art and literature, sport and English), help with homework and meals on a menu drawn up by dietitians; it is run by teachers with a degree in pedagogy. The school publishes neither the number of pupils nor tuition fees.

About the fees The school does not publish the price. There is no section about the cost of tuition on its site at all: the admissions pages lead to an application form and suggest discussing the terms at an interview, and they name neither a monthly nor an annual sum. Nor is the price of the RB+ after-school programme, of the extracurricular classes and of the international line named.
Admissions Admission the school describes as a check of whether the expectations of the family match its pedagogical model. The order is this: an application through a form, an interview with the family and a visit to the campus, the report card from the previous school, and from the third grade to graduation a diagnostic paper as well. If a child has special educational needs, the school asks that this be stated in the application and that documents be brought to the interview, so that the support that will be required can be judged in advance. The school names no deadlines, no quotas and no number of places.
Stages and year groups Grades Educação Infantil 2 - 3ª série do Ensino Médio. The pre-school stage runs as four age groups, EI 2, EI 3, EI 4 and EI 5, that is, from two to five years, and then comes the first grade. The Ensino Fundamental stage is divided into the junior and the senior years, Anos Iniciais and Anos Finais, and the senior stage runs for three years, from the first to the third. Free places the school opens on the afternoon shift, and in the senior stage on the morning one; those who study in the afternoon and want to move to the morning are put on a waiting list. In the pre-school groups from three to five years the work follows the Ciranda project of the Mathema publishing house. The school names no class sizes and no number of year groups.

Campus: One campus in Barão Geraldo of 40,000 square metres, next to the Unicamp university; the school moved here in 1975. There are parks and open grounds, a paper and an electronic library, science laboratories, multi-purpose sports courts, an assembly hall and a separate RB Maker room for technical classes. The classrooms are fitted with projectors, pupils are given Chromebooks, Wi-Fi works across the whole site, and the school points separately to its own dedicated internet channel. The school canteen is given a section of the site of its own, and the RB+ after-school programme feeds children on a menu drawn up by dietitians.
