Escuela Internacional Waldorf Rudolf Steiner is a small Waldorf school in La Nucía, on the Costa Blanca, set up as a non-profit association by parents who knew this pedagogy from experience. It takes children from three to twelve: a preschool stage from three to six and a primary from six to twelve. Teaching follows Waldorf practice and is not built as a timetable of subjects: lessons are gathered into "epochs" of three or four weeks in which the class lives with one theme, and art - painting, music, eurythmy, craft - counts as part of the learning rather than decoration. The school sets no examinations: instead of marks it keeps a qualitative record of each child's progress with detailed reports. It explains its age logic in its own words through three seven-year periods: up to seven a child learns by imitation and play, from seven to fourteen through feeling and imagination, and from fourteen through thought and independent judgement. The school calls itself bilingual and requires working Spanish and English at admission, which runs in four steps: a visit, a conversation with the teachers, trial days with a placement assessment, and the admissions committee's decision; mid-year entry is possible if there is a place. Its pedagogical adviser is named as Sandra Chandía, with twenty-two years of Waldorf teaching. The main thing a parent needs to know: the school is not yet accredited by NEASC but only going through recognition, and on the Spanish side it has no certificate of its own - after the age of twelve a child continues at another school.

Admissions The school admits children regardless of race, religion, sex or nationality, and to the question whether it takes international pupils it answers directly: yes, if the child has working Spanish, and English too for the bilingual programme. International pupils are admitted on the general terms and bring documents for recognition of their previous schooling. Admission goes in four steps: a visit to the school with an introduction to Waldorf teaching, a conversation with teachers and tutors, trial days to see how the child settles in, and a decision by the admissions committee. Age and level must match the class, and where they fall short the school may set support lessons. The family undertakes to follow the school's rules and to take an active part in its life. Children are taken during the year if there is a place and the teaching team agrees; children with special educational needs are considered case by case.
Stages and year groups Grades ages 3-12: Infantil and Primaria. Two stages: Infantil from three to six and Primaria from six to twelve. Lessons run in "epochs" of three or four weeks on one theme. The school ends at twelve: it has no middle stage. It publishes no daily timetable.

What stands behind each entry

NEASCNew England Association of Schools and Colleges

An American accreditation working since 1885. For international schools it uses an approach where the visitors look first at live lessons rather than at folders of paperwork: the team works in the school for about a week. It is the only one here whose public directory honestly separates accredited schools from candidates.

What the badge means for this school. The school is a candidate for accreditation by this organisation: the route has been started but not completed. Candidacy speaks of an application made and a file accepted for consideration, not of the outcome of an inspection, and the organisations themselves usually require schools to say that it does not guarantee accreditation. The candidacy is confirmed in the organisation's open directory.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
