European School Ljubljana (Evropska šola Ljubljana) is the only school in Slovenia running the European Schools programme. It was established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia in January 2018 and operates as part of Šolski center Ljubljana (Ljubljana School Centre), which also includes Gimnazija Antona Aškerca, Srednja lesarska šola, Srednja šola za strojništvo, kemijo in varovanje and Višja strokovna šola. There are two language sections, Slovene and English; nursery is offered only in the English section. The language of instruction is taken from the FAQ and the level pages: «the language of instruction in the Slovene section will be Slovene and English in the English section». The first foreign language (L2: English, French or German) is studied from P1, and from S3 some subjects are taught in it; in S1 an L3 is added, chosen from German, French, Italian, Spanish and Slovene, and Latin and Ancient Greek are available in the upper years. Nursery and primary are taught in a separate wing of the centre's building at Aškerčeva cesta 1, secondary since the 2023-2024 school year at Tržaška cesta 118. The school stresses in-depth language learning and native-speaker teachers. The leaving diploma is the European Baccalaureate.

Admissions The school's Admission Policy gives first priority to children of staff of EU institutions and agencies. Then, until the application deadline, places are allocated in this order: children who have already attended a European Schools programme; children of foreign citizens working at diplomatic missions, consular posts, international organisations, companies and other organisations in Slovenia; children of Slovenian citizens posted to EU institutions, diplomatic missions or international organisations; finally «Children of other citizens of the Republic of Slovenia and other foreigners with a permanent or temporary address in the Republic of Slovenia». After the deadline, pupils are admitted until places are filled, including during the school year. The procedure: an enquiry form on the website, then an online form, documents (passports or ID cards of the parents and the child, school reports from the previous school translated into English or Slovene) and a learning contract signed by the parents and the head of school. N1 admits children in the year they turn 4, P1 in the year they turn 6. There is no admission to S7: the European Baccalaureate can be taken only by pupils who start no later than S6. A child without their own language section is enrolled in the English section or, at the family's choice, in the Slovene section; in case of doubt the language is determined by a test.
Stages and year groups Grades N1-N2, P1-P5, S1-S7. Early Education for children aged 4-5, in the English section only; primary P1-P5 (5 years) and secondary S1-S7 (7 years) in the Slovene and English sections; secondary is divided into the S1-S3, S4-S5 and S6-S7 cycles. The curriculum is the European Schools programme, set in Slovenia by the «Rules on Implementation of the European School Ljubljana programme» adopted by the Minister of Education. The diploma is the European Baccalaureate: «Pupils finish education with the European Baccalaureate (EB)». The school website shows no Slovenian national programme, IB or other diplomas.

What stands behind each entry

European SchoolsThe European Union's European Schools (Schola Europaea)

An intergovernmental system of European Union schools with its own curriculum and its own certificate, the European Baccalaureate. It runs thirteen schools of its own, and national schools gain the status of Accredited European School after an audit with a visit by inspectors. The certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country.

What the badge means for this school. The school runs the European Schools curriculum, and this can be checked in the system's lists at eursc.eu. The system's own schools are checked by inspectors from EU countries, accredited schools pass an in-school audit, and accreditation is renewed every three years. Whether the school awards the European Baccalaureate, and whom it admits, is stated on its own page. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

European Schools programme (European Baccalaureate)

The European Union's European Schools curriculum from nursery to the final year, with the European Baccalaureate as the leaving certificate. Teaching is in language sections, and a second language is compulsory from primary school.

What this means for this school. The curriculum and the certificate are set by the European Schools system, whose Board of Governors is made up of the education ministers of the EU countries. European Baccalaureate papers are marked by the teacher and an external examiner, and the certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country and in several others. A school may award it only if it is one of the system's own schools or is accredited for the senior years.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
