Geitonas School (in Greek Εκπαιδευτήρια Γείτονα) is a private all-through school on the south-eastern slopes of Hymettus, between Vari and Koropi: from a nursery (Paidikos Stathmos) and kindergarten to the lyceum and the IB Diploma Programme. It was founded in 1995 in its own buildings on a 65000 m² site; the founder and general director is Eleftherios Geitonas. The school describes itself as a modern Greek school «με ελληνοκεντρικό χαρακτήρα, ευρωπαϊκή διάσταση και παγκόσμια προοπτική» - «with a Greek-centred character, a European dimension and a global perspective». The core follows the Greek national curriculum with preparation for the Panhellenic exams; the school has offered the IB Diploma Programme since the year it was founded. The language of instruction is inferred from the school's pages: entrance exams for Gymnasio and lyceum are in Modern Greek, Ancient Greek and mathematics, while the IB section, its brochure and course descriptions are in English, and IB subjects (except the Modern Greek and Chinese language courses) are taught in English. The school strengthens English: it holds Cambridge English Gold+ Preparation Centre status; optional languages also include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Arabic and Russian.

Admissions Gymnasio and lyceum admit by entrance exams held several times a year; places are limited and admission is by ranking. For the first year of Gymnasio candidates sit Modern Greek and mathematics, for the upper Gymnasio years Ancient Greek is added, for the lyceum physics, and Latin for the humanities stream. For the nursery, kindergarten and grade 1: an application, a meeting of parents with the management and a meeting of the child with a member of the counselling department; for the middle primary grades also a short written check in language and mathematics. The IB Diploma Programme admits students from the school and from other schools through spring diagnostic tests in Modern Greek language and literature, English (for those without a Proficiency certificate) and mathematics, plus physics or chemistry for those choosing them; tests are in Greek and English, and next year no more than 45 students will be admitted to the IB.
Stages and year groups Grades Paidikos Stathmos - Lykeio, IB DP. Stages: Paidikos Stathmos (nursery), Pronipio and Nipio (kindergarten), Dimotiko, Gymnasio, Geniko Lykeio (Apolytirio, Panhellenic exams) and the IB Diploma Programme for the last two school years. The IB is a separate track: a student chooses between the Greek lyceum and the IB, and lyceum scholarships cannot be transferred to the IB or vice versa. There is a Pre-IB Study Skills course before the IB.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

PearsonPearson Edexcel, a British exam board

It gives a school approved centre status: that means Pearson exams can be sat in the school itself. What is checked is the premises, the equipment, the secure storage of papers and the presence of trained invigilators.

What the badge means for this school. The school can run Pearson exams on its own premises. The status says nothing about teaching, about results or about the school itself: any school able to run an exam securely holds it. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. Which Pearson qualifications this school is approved for is not stated here.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
