The Greek School of Bucharest "Athena" is a Greek school in the north of Bucharest, founded in 2008. It describes itself as the only public school of the Greek authorities in Romania and follows the Greek public education system in structure, curriculum and timetable. It was founded under a memorandum of understanding between the Greek Embassy in Bucharest, on behalf of the Greek Ministry of Education, and the Parents and Guardians Association: the ministry appoints and pays teachers and senior management, while the parents' association runs the school, pays the building rent and other costs with money from parents, the Greek business community in Romania and individual donors. Lessons are in Greek; the school also teaches Romanian and English. The school says not all its pupils are Greek, and it encourages activities that bring together children from different communities. The website describes a kindergarten (nipiagogeio), a primary school (dimotiko) and a lower secondary school (gymnasio); it calls founding an upper secondary school (lykeio) the next step.

Admissions The school says it wants to keep its doors open to any child who wishes to follow the Greek education system, whether or not the family can contribute to the school's costs. Full and partial scholarships are available for children of any nationality who cannot afford to attend, in any grade: applicants need proven financial need, strong academic ability, community involvement and ethical behaviour; applications are accepted until the end of June and answered by September. Visits are possible after calling the office at least one day ahead. The school names no Greek language requirement or admission documents; enrolment enquiries go to the president of the parents' association.
Stages and year groups The school follows the Greek public education system: kindergarten (nipiagogeio), a six-year primary school (dimotiko) and a three-year lower secondary school (gymnasio). In the 2015-2016 school year, according to the website, the gymnasio had three classes, the primary school ran all six grades with four teachers, and the kindergarten had one teacher. The website calls founding an upper secondary school (lykeio) the next step.

YPAITHAGreece's Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports (YPAITHA)
A Greek school abroad: the Greek curriculum taught in Greek, and the school belongs to the formal Greek education system under the ministry's supervision. Every such school is named on the list of Greece's education ministry.
What the badge means for this school. This is a Greek school abroad, and that can be checked on the list of Greece's education ministry. The entry is not a quality inspection: a school is on the list as part of the Greek education system, not as the outcome of an assessment. The curriculum and the certificate are Greek. Whom the school admits and what it charges are on its own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

The Greek school curriculum taught in Greek, with Greek qualifications: the gymnasium certificate and the lyceum certificate.
What this means for this school. The curriculum is set by Greece's education ministry, which also names the school on its list of Greek-language schools abroad that belong to the formal Greek education system. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
