Istituto di Istruzione Superiore Enrico Mattei is a state upper secondary school in San Lazzaro di Savena near Bologna. It began as a branch of a technical commercial institute and became independent in 1982; in the 2003-2004 school year a liceo scientifico and a liceo delle scienze umane were added to the technical business track. Since the 2016-2017 school year the school has been Cambridge accredited and runs sections with Cambridge IGCSE courses: in the liceo scientifico all classes have enhanced English and IGCSE Physics and Biology, the technical business track has sections with IGCSE Economics, the liceo delle scienze umane sections with IGCSE Sociology, and the liceo economico sociale combines English with enhanced French. All Cambridge sections sit the B2 First exam, and C1 Advanced is also available. Cambridge subjects are partly taught in English with native speakers, the main language of instruction is Italian and the final qualification is the Italian maturità. In the 2023-2024 school year the school had 1446 students and 101 teachers.

About the fees Tuition at this state school is free. For the 2026-2027 school year the school council set a voluntary contribution of 120 euro, which is tax deductible. Families of Cambridge students also pay annually for the native-speaker teacher, Cambridge exam registration and the B2 First exam.
Admissions Year 1 enrolment is through the national Iscrizioni online platform (Piattaforma Unica) with SPID, CIE, CNS or eIDAS login; the Cambridge option is chosen at enrolment and is considered confirmed unless the school says otherwise. To complete enrolment by 10 July families submit the middle school final exam mark and the INVALSI certificate in Italian and mathematics. Future year 1 students of Cambridge sections take an online English placement test; those who do not pass are offered a 10-hour catch-up course in early September. Parents of Cambridge students sign a commitment to pay for the native-speaker teacher and exams and accept that the Cambridge track cannot be changed during the course. For newly arrived foreign students there is a reception protocol and Italian as a second language courses; in the 2023-2024 school year foreign students made up about 3% in the liceo scientifico, 7% in the liceo delle scienze umane and 14% in the technical track.
Stages and year groups Tracks ending with the esame di Stato: liceo scientifico (only with the Cambridge and IGCSE course), liceo delle scienze umane (standard and Cambridge sections), liceo delle scienze umane opzione economico-sociale (Cambridge English and enhanced French), istituto tecnico economico (common two-year cycle, then amministrazione finanza e marketing, relazioni internazionali per il marketing, sistemi informativi aziendali; standard and Cambridge sections). Cambridge IGCSE: Physics in the liceo scientifico (years 1-2, 1 and 2 hours a week, one hour co-taught with the physics teacher, exam at the start of year 3), Biology (years 2-4, one hour each, exam at the end of year 4), Economics in the technical track, Sociology in the liceo delle scienze umane (one co-taught hour and two extracurricular hours with a native speaker, exam at the start of year 5). Cambridge English is an extra hour in years 1-3 of the licei with the B2 First exam at the end of year 3. Exams are taken at the school in May-June and October-November.

What stands behind each entry

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
