Liceo Ginnasio Statale Classico e Linguistico Mariano Buratti is the oldest state liceo in Viterbo: the classical school opened in December 1870, became the state Regio Liceo Ginnasio Umberto I in 1909, and in 1964 was named after Mariano Buratti, the school's history and philosophy teacher who was executed in 1944 for his part in the Resistance. Since 1952 the school has been on Via Carletti, and in 2001 the city's languages liceo joined it. About 1100 students attend in 51 classes. Tracks: the classical liceo (traditional, with a biomedical focus and Cambridge International) and the languages liceo (traditional, EsaBac with a double Italian-French diploma, with the German DSD diploma and Cambridge International). Lessons are in Italian. Since 2019-2020 the Cambridge International classical liceo has taught Latin, Mathematics and English following Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses with native-speaker teachers, and since 2022-2023 the Cambridge languages liceo has taught English, French and Spanish following Cambridge syllabuses, with Global Perspectives added from year 3. Students may sit IGCSE exams at school.

About the fees The school is a state school and tuition is free. The school council asks families for a voluntary contribution of about 80 euros a year (in 2024-2025) to enrich the curriculum, paid through PagoPA. Cambridge IGCSE exams are paid: in 2026 an exam costs 114.25 euros.
Admissions Admission to year 1 follows the state online procedure through the Piattaforma Unica: for 2026-2027 applications were accepted from 13 January to 10 February 2026, and late applications are considered for remaining places. For the Cambridge International classical and languages licei, as for other tracks, only the lower secondary diploma and online enrolment are required; the school names no separate selection. In the languages liceo, the second and third languages are chosen at enrolment: the second must be the one studied in lower secondary school; allocation depends on provincial staffing. EsaBac is chosen at first enrolment. The school states in its PTOF that it supports foreign students and students with disabilities and learning difficulties.
Stages and year groups Five-year liceo following the Italian curriculum with the esame di Stato. Liceo classico: traditional; with a biomedical focus (lab work and sessions with doctors and the Università della Tuscia); Cambridge International since 2019-2020 - IGCSE Latin, Mathematics and English as a Second Language: in years 1-2, 2 extra hours of English and 1 extra hour of Mathematics with a native speaker, and 1 of the 5 Latin hours with a native speaker or a teacher with C1 English (until 2024-2025); in years 3-4, 1 extra hour of Mathematics with a native speaker; in year 3, 1 of the 3 English hours with a native speaker. Liceo linguistico (English, French, Spanish, German): traditional, with CLIL from year 3; EsaBac - double diploma esame di Stato and Baccalauréat; DSD - about 750 hours of German over five years, DSD I exam in year 3 and DSD II in year 5, free at school; Cambridge International since 2022-2023 - IGCSE English as a Second Language, French and Spanish following Cambridge syllabuses, with Cambridge Global Perspectives from year 3 in 2026-2027. IGCSE exams are taken at school at the family's choice.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

Cambridge · IGCSE · authorised programme
The Cambridge register names the school as its centre; it teaches Cambridge IGCSE. The Cambridge classical liceo teaches Latin, maths and English to IGCSE with native speakers, and the Cambridge languages liceo covers English, French, Spanish and, from year 3, Global Perspectives.

What stands behind each entry

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

What the listings show: native-speaker teachers and teachers with B2 and C1 language certificates
In the Cambridge International classes some English, Mathematics and Latin lessons are taught by native English-speaking teachers; in the EsaBac, DSD and Cambridge tracks at least 20% of teachers are native speakers or hold B2 and C1 language certificates. The DSD track has native-speaker teachers appointed by the German ministry.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
