Lycée Français International d'Anvers (LFIA) is a French international day school in Antwerp and, in its own words, the only French international school in Flanders. Its history goes back to 1901 and the Belgian French-speaking Institut Rochez; in the 2000s it became the Lycée Français International and joined the AEFE network, and it now belongs to the Odyssey Education group. Children are admitted from two and a half years old, from nursery through to Terminale. Teaching follows the official programmes of the French Ministry of Education. In nursery and primary, lessons are bilingual: 13 hours a week in French, 10 in English and 3 in Dutch. In secondary, teaching is in French; Spanish is added from 4ème, so that by the age of twelve a student studies four languages. The Passerelle programme gives non-French and non-English speakers intensive lessons in very small groups. Lycée students follow the CNED distance-learning programme: "Les professeurs suivent les progressions et assurent le respect du calendrier des devoirs du Centre National d'Enseignement à Distance (CNED)", and the CNED decides on promotion to the next class. Graduates obtain the French baccalauréat, and as a Cambridge International School the school lets students take Cambridge English certifications. Children of more than 30 nationalities attend, and school uniform is compulsory.

Admissions "Le Lycée Français International accueille les élèves issus de l'enseignement français, belge, et de tout autre pays"; the class of admission depends on the decisions of the previous school. A good command of French is desirable, and newcomers can take French as a foreign language. Registration is online only: school reports for the previous and current year and passport copies of the parents and the child are required. A pedagogical interview is offered within 5 working days after the file is processed, and the answer is sent by email 2-3 days after the admissions committee. The committee assesses the child's ability to integrate and succeed at the school. For the current year, registration stays open within the limit of available places; when places are short the school keeps a waiting list ordered by the date of payment of the first registration fee. French nationals can apply for a scholarship through the French Embassy, and families of any nationality in difficulty through the Odyssey & Avenir fund.

What stands behind each entry

AEFEAgency for French Education Abroad

It runs the network of French schools worldwide, while the accreditation itself, the homologation, is granted by the French education ministry and inspected by French state inspectors. A leaver from a homologated school moves into a school in France without an entrance examination. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. Which stages - from the early years programme for three-year-olds up to A-Level - this school is approved for is not stated here.

French programme

The state programme of France. A school is homologated by the French ministry of education, and a leaver may move into a school in France without entrance tests. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What this means for this school. Which year groups of this school are covered by homologation - only the primary ones, or all the way to the final year - is not stated here. The difference matters: it decides whether the school takes a child through to the French baccalaureate or hands them on to another school halfway.

Odyssey Educationschool network

A French group of international schools with its own site, odyssey.education; it describes itself as "a French international education group whose schools around the world provide an outstanding education from kindergarten through high school, combining the French national curriculum with innovative teaching methods", and its programme is declared as homologated by AEFE. The year the group was created is not given on the site; it says that Luc Chatel, a former French minister, co-founded Odyssey Education and has been its president since 2020, and that Catherine Lespine holds the post of chief executive. The numbers disagree within the site itself, and we give them all: the "Our schools" section writes "12 excellent schools on 3 continents and in 11 countries", the "A propos" page shows 12 schools and lists ten countries, and the French "Groupe Odyssey" page lists eleven schools in nine countries. The Asian part of the network is four schools under the La Petite Ecole name: Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi; La Petite Ecole Bangkok is given in the list of the group's schools and in the footer, with a link to lpebangkok.com. The site gives no total number of pupils and nowhere explains whether the schools belong to the group, are managed by it or work as a franchise.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
