Lycée français Vincent van Gogh La Haye-Amsterdam is a French school of the AEFE network directly managed by the French state agency, teaching the official programmes of the French Ministry of Education. It was founded in 1947 by French families in the Netherlands; it has borne the name Vincent van Gogh since 1980 and has been directly managed by the French state since 1986. The school has two sites: in Den Haag a primary school, collège and lycée with about 900 students; in Amsterdam the École française d'Amsterdam, a primary school (maternelle and élémentaire) founded in 1957 by the Michelin company and part of the lycée since 1989. In total more than 1000 students of more than 50 nationalities attend. Teaching is in French; from maternelle English or Dutch, later the other of the two, and from collège German or Spanish. There is an American international section (SIA) from CE2 to lycée leading to the Baccalauréat français international, a European section, and the brevet and baccalauréat exams. Almost half of graduates continue their studies outside France.

About the fees Annual fees 2026-2027: Amsterdam, PS-CM2 - 8501 EUR; Den Haag, PS-CM2 - 8643 EUR, 6e-3e - 11968 EUR, 2nde-Terminale - 12436 EUR. The American international section costs an extra 250 EUR in CE2-CM2 and 1000 EUR from 6e to Terminale; the European section in lycée 400 EUR. French children may receive an AEFE scholarship with full or partial fee exemption depending on family income; a solidarity fund helps families of any nationality in temporary difficulty.
Admissions Pre-registration is online only; children are placed in the class matching their year of birth. Applications are ranked by priority: first children from French state schools, private schools under contract with the state and accredited French schools abroad (except PS), then siblings of current students, then by age, oldest first. Children from schools not accredited by the French Ministry of Education take written tests in French and mathematics from GS to 1ère, sometimes remotely; decisions depend on the results, previous schooling and available places. Direct entry to the final year (Terminale) is not possible. The American international section selects through a separate application. The school does not admit children who do not live with their parents, and simultaneous registration in Den Haag and Amsterdam is not possible. A birth certificate in French, English or Dutch, parents' documents, school reports and a certificate from the previous French school are required. The first registration fee is 500 EUR.
Stages and year groups Grades PS-MS-GS, CP-CM2, 6e-3e, 2nde-Terminale. French Ministry of Education curriculum: école maternelle (PS, MS, GS, from age 3), école élémentaire (CP-CM2), collège (6e-3e) with the diplôme national du brevet, and lycée (2nde, 1ère, Terminale) with the baccalauréat général; Amsterdam has only maternelle and élémentaire (8 classes), while collège and lycée are in Den Haag. Language pathways: the American international section (SIA from CE2; from 6e history-geography half in English and American literature; in 1ère-Terminale the Baccalauréat français international), the EURO option in collège and the European section in lycée (history-geography in English), and the classic pathway. In lycée students choose three specialities in 1ère and two in Terminale; there are mathématiques complémentaires and expertes options, theatre and Latin. The school does not offer IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

What stands behind each entry

AEFEAgency for French Education Abroad

It runs the network of French schools worldwide, while the accreditation itself, the homologation, is granted by the French education ministry and inspected by French state inspectors. A leaver from a homologated school moves into a school in France without an entrance examination. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

French programme

The state programme of France. A school is homologated by the French ministry of education, and a leaver may move into a school in France without entrance tests. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What this means for this school. Which year groups of this school are covered by homologation - only the primary ones, or all the way to the final year - is not stated here. The difference matters: it decides whether the school takes a child through to the French baccalaureate or hands them on to another school halfway.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
