Istituto Omnicomprensivo Scuola Europea di Brindisi is a state institution that brings together Liceo Scientifico Fermi-Monticelli and all levels of the accredited European School of Brindisi. The liceo was created in the 2013-2014 school year by merging the city's two state science licei, E. Fermi and T. Monticelli; the European School, accredited by the Board of Governors of the European Schools, opened a year later. Two tracks run in one institution. The Italian track: scuola dell'infanzia, Sandro Pertini primary school, G. Mameli lower secondary school and a liceo scientifico with the ordinario, scienze applicate and sportivo tracks, a four-year course, a data science and artificial intelligence strand and a biomedical strand. The European track: nursery, primary P1-P5, secondary S1-S3 and the four-year European High School S4-S7 leading to the European Baccalaureate; it has two language sections, Italian and English. Since the 2021-2022 school year the liceo has been a Liceo Cambridge International: in one ordinario class and one scienze applicate class, English, History, Mathematics and Physics follow Cambridge syllabuses with preparation for IGCSE examinations. According to the school, it has 875 students in 39 classes.

About the fees The school is a state school (scuola statale); tuition in the Italian track, the Cambridge class and the European School is free, and enrolment is through the state Iscrizioni online procedure. The Cambridge course page and admission criteria say nothing about any charge for the course or IGCSE examinations. The Puglia region provides a textbook allowance for lower and upper secondary students.
Admissions Enrolment in the first classes of the Italian track is through the state Iscrizioni online procedure in January. If the liceo is oversubscribed, priority goes to residents of Brindisi, then residents of municipalities without such a track, children with a parent working in Brindisi, siblings of students, then a draw; the sports track (up to 26 places) selects by marks and sporting results; for the Cambridge class, if oversubscribed, an English test is held that does not exclude anyone but only ranks applicants. The European School gives priority by category: category I - children of UN staff in Brindisi, category II - children of staff of organisations and companies with an agreement with the school, category III - children of private families, for remaining places. P1 admits children who are 6 or turn 6 by 31 December, S1 at 11, S4 at 14; S1 and S4 each have one class of 28 places, students from the school's own European level come first, and others from Italian schools sit a written test: for S1 English at A2 level, Italian and Mathematics, for S4 English B1, French or Spanish A2, Italian and Mathematics (a certificate exempts from the language test). The English-language classes admit children whose mother tongue is English or who attended a school where English is the language of instruction; their previous schooling is assessed on enrolment, with an entry test if needed. The Italian class of the European School is formed only if an English-language class is formed.
Stages and year groups Italian programme: scuola dell'infanzia, scuola primaria, scuola secondaria di primo grado (esame di Stato del primo ciclo) and liceo scientifico (esame di Stato) - ordinario, opzione scienze applicate, indirizzo sportivo, a four-year liceo scientifico ordinario quadriennale, the Scienza dei dati e dell'Intelligenza Artificiale strand since the 2023-2024 school year, and the Biologia con curvatura biomedica strand. Cambridge International course since the 2021-2022 school year: in one ordinario class and one scienze applicate class English, History, Mathematics and Physics follow Cambridge syllabuses, a native speaker co-teaches one hour a week with the teacher plus one additional hour; students prepare for the Cambridge IGCSE examinations in English as a Second Language, History, Mathematics and Physics; the school does not specify in which liceo years the examinations are taken. European School: nursery, P1-P5, S1-S3 and the European High School S4-S7 (four years: S4-S5 pre-orientation cycle, S6-S7 orientation cycle with individual choice of subjects, 31 to 35 periods a week), leading to the European Baccalaureate: five written and three oral examinations, with L1, L2 and Mathematics compulsory. Two sections: Italian (L1 Italian, L2 English) and English (L1 English, L2 French); History and Geography in the upper years are taught in L2.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

Cambridge · IGCSE · authorised programmeEuropean Schools · authorised programme
The Cambridge register names the school as its centre; it teaches Cambridge IGCSE. One ordinario and one applied-science liceo class follow Cambridge English, History, Maths and Physics towards IGCSE; the same institute runs an accredited European School leading to the European Baccalaureate. The European Schools system lists it as an Accredited European School: graduates sit the European Baccalaureate.

What stands behind each entry

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.

European SchoolsThe European Union's European Schools (Schola Europaea)

An intergovernmental system of European Union schools with its own curriculum and its own certificate, the European Baccalaureate. It runs thirteen schools of its own, and national schools gain the status of Accredited European School after an audit with a visit by inspectors. The certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country.

What the badge means for this school. The school runs the European Schools curriculum, and this can be checked in the system's lists at eursc.eu. The system's own schools are checked by inspectors from EU countries, accredited schools pass an in-school audit, and accreditation is renewed every three years. Whether the school awards the European Baccalaureate, and whom it admits, is stated on its own page. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

European Baccalaureate

The European Union's European Schools curriculum from nursery to the final year, with the European Baccalaureate as the leaving certificate. Teaching is in language sections, and a second language is compulsory from primary school.

What this means for this school. The curriculum and the certificate are set by the European Schools system, whose Board of Governors is made up of the education ministers of the EU countries. European Baccalaureate papers are marked by the teacher and an external examiner, and the certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country and in several others. A school may award it only if it is one of the system's own schools or is accredited for the senior years.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
