Riga State Gymnasium No.1 traces its history to the Dome Cathedral School, founded in 1211, the oldest school in the Baltic states. In 1631 the institution was reorganised into an Academic Gymnasium, in 1874 it moved into its current building at Raiņa bulvāris 8, and in 1990, after Latvia restored its independence, it took back its historic name; the current name was fixed in 1996. The gymnasium admits students from grade 7 to grade 12 and has 33 classes. Besides six general secondary education programmes with an increased number of hours in mathematics and the first foreign language, since 1997, the first school in the Baltics to do so, it has run the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which about 30 students complete each year; teaching on this track is in English. A separate German Language Diploma programme (DSD) runs with instruction in German. The gymnasium has a student council, an alumni association, and a school history museum founded in 1967. Graduates go on to universities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States. Of the infrastructure, the website names only catering, arranged through a separate contract with the canteen; there is no information on sports or laboratory facilities.

Admissions Admission to grade 7 is competitive, through an entrance exam in mathematics; admission to grade 10 is competitive, through a written mathematics exam common to all Riga state gymnasiums, and admission to grades 11 to 12 is to free places based on the results of the same exam. By the school's own historical figures, competition has reached up to ten applicants per place. Teaching is in Latvian, and knowledge of Latvian is required for the exams and for studies; the website states no citizenship requirement or restriction on foreign applicants.
