Școala Austriacă Moldova (in German Österreichische Schule Moldau, SAM; the school is named after Erhard Busek) is a new Austrian school abroad in Chișinău, under the Austrian Ministry of Education and part of the network of Austrian schools abroad. It is a private HTL (Höhere Technische Lehranstalt), a higher technical college for electronics and technical computer science that combines general education with an engineering qualification. The course lasts five years, Austrian school levels 9 to 13, and ends with the Austrian Reife- und Diplomprüfung (Matura): according to the school it gives access to universities in Moldova and the whole EU and, after work experience, to the Austrian engineer title (Ing.). The first students started in September 2025; the school itself says it is "im Aufbau" (being built up). Teachers come from Austria and Moldova; teaching is primarily in German, with some lessons in Romanian and English. For future students the school runs a year-long German preparation course and a summer intensive course. The school is run by the Österreichische Schulstiftung foundation; the principal is Victoria Trares and the managing director is Nadia Radețchi.

About the fees Tuition for the 2025-2026 school year is 1200 euros. The tuition page, without a year, gives 1260 euros a year; in addition there is a one-time enrolment fee of 50 euros, a textbook fee of 100 euros a year and workshop and practical materials charged at actual cost; the school notes that prices depend on exchange rates and are indexed.
Admissions The school is enrolling first-year HTL students for the 2026-2027 school year: the completed form is sent to info@scoala-austriaca.md, and pre-registration is open. The school says that once the form is sent the student is "înregistrat la școala noastră" (registered at the school), but this does not give any preference in selection. The German preparation course is for pupils finishing Grade 9 of a Moldovan school who will start at SAM the following year; the year-long course runs three afternoons a week, the 8-week summer intensive course brings students to level A2, and the course fee can be credited against tuition. Families can visit at SAM Drop in every Tuesday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00 by prior appointment. Sponsor-funded scholarships are available: a full scholarship of 6000 euros for all 5 years and a partial one of 3000 euros. The website does not say whether foreign students are admitted: it only says the school teaches Moldovan students.
Stages and year groups Grades 9-13. HTL for electronics and technical computer science: five years (Jahrgang I-V), Austrian school levels 9 to 13, ending with the Austrian Reife- und Diplomprüfung (Matura) and a vocational qualification, and after work experience the engineer title (Ing.). The school does not mention the Moldovan bacalaureat. The school opened in September 2025; first-year enrolment is under way for the 2026-2027 school year, so only the lower years are running and there are no upper years or graduates yet. The curriculum has general subjects (German, English, mathematics, natural sciences, history, economics and law, PE) and technical subjects (hardware development, measurement technology, digital and computer systems, networks, software engineering, laboratory, prototyping of electronic systems); Romanian language and literature is an optional subject, 4 hours a week in the first three years. The workload is 34-37 hours a week.

What stands behind each entry

BMBAustria's Federal Ministry of Education (BMB)

An Austrian school abroad: the Austrian curriculum adapted to the country, teachers sent by Austria's ministry, and leavers receive the Austrian Matura and the local certificate. Every such school is named on the list of Austria's education ministry.

What the badge means for this school. This is an Austrian school abroad, and that can be checked on the list of Austria's education ministry. The entry is not a quality inspection: a school is on the list as part of the Austrian network, not as the outcome of an assessment. What it charges and in which language the youngest pupils are taught are on the school's own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

The Austrian school curriculum adapted to the country: leavers receive the Austrian Matura and the local certificate.

What this means for this school. The curriculum is set by Austria's education ministry, which also names the school on its list of Austrian schools abroad and sends its teachers. The Matura is the Austrian school-leaving certificate used for entry to Austrian universities; according to the ministry, the school's certificates are recognised by both countries.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
