Svenska skolan Teneriffa is a small Swedish school by the beach in Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife, opened in September 2002, for children aged 3 to 18. The school is approved by Skolverket and teaches the Swedish curriculum Lgr22, so moving from and back to Sweden is smooth. All staff are teachers educated at Swedish universities with a Swedish teaching licence. Classes have no more than 15 pupils, and the preschool no more than 10 children. The Tryggheten preschool takes children aged 3-5, and förskoleklass and grades 1-6 are taught on site in groups F-1, 2-3 and 4-6 using the Storyline method with a shared thematic story. Grades 7-9 follow the Swedish distance programme of Sofia Distans and upper secondary pupils Hermods or Korrespondensgymnasiet, with a tutor teacher at school. From October to March separate classes open for short-stay pupils, who work on assignments from their school in Sweden. Spanish is taught 2 times 60 minutes a week to everyone, and English and Spanish are extended from förskoleklass. The year is full of traditions: kayaking with dolphins, Lucia, carnival, Spain week, hikes and an overnight camp in the forest near Teide, and competitions among Swedish schools abroad in athletics, reading and chess.

About the fees Fees for pupils staying a term or longer, without the state grant: preschool for ages 3-5 and förskoleklass to upper secondary 2620 EUR for the autumn term, 3360 EUR for the spring term, 5690 EUR per year; Sofia Distans and Hermods pupils 2380, 2930 and 5070 EUR (the school gives them a 600 EUR reduction because part of the cost goes to the distance school). The fee table sits under the heading 2026-2027, while a worked example on the same page calls the same amounts the 2025-2026 fees. For förskoleklass to grade 6 pupils eligible for the state grant: 1705 EUR for autumn and 3170 EUR per year; the state grant applies to Swedish pupils in F-6 and Norwegian and Finnish pupils in grades 1-9 who are enrolled by 15 October and stay at least six months; the preschool and the school's grades 7-9 are not eligible. Short-stay pupils pay 695 EUR for 4 weeks or 210 EUR per week, minimum one month; for families registered in Finland staying 4 weeks or more the price is halved. Fees include lunch, materials and excursions. A 10% discount applies from the third child. If a municipality transfers skolpeng, the family pays only the registration fee and deposit.
Admissions Applications are accepted at any time, and a child can start almost the next day if there is a place, for anything from a week to several years; applying is free. Applications for the next school year open on 1 January; priority goes first by length of stay (full-year pupils), then former pupils, then application date. Families staying a term or longer get an answer within two weeks, short-stay families in March. The most popular months (November, January, February) fill quickly. The place is secured with the registration fee and deposit; an intake meeting is held before starting, and each new pupil is given a pupil buddy. If a child has had special support, reports must be attached; the head decides, the school is small and cannot admit children enrolled in Sweden in an adapted school. Pupils in grades 7-9 and upper secondary submit two applications: to the distance school and to this school.
Stages and year groups Swedish curriculum Lgr22 under the Swedish timetable with extended Spanish. The Tryggheten preschool for ages 3-5 (no more than 10 children); classes in 2026-2027: Nyfikenheten (F-1), Glädjen (2-3), Lyckan (4-6) with a class teacher for most subjects and separate teachers for practical subjects. Kärleken (grades 7-9 and upper secondary) - pupils of the Swedish distance school Sofia Distans (Stockholm), which sets grades and marks work, and upper secondary pupils of Hermods distansgymnasium or Korrespondensgymnasiet; at school they work with a tutor teacher. Gemenskapen is a class for short-stay pupils from grade 4, working with materials from their own school. The school offers no international programmes.

What stands behind each entry

SkolverketSwedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket)

A Swedish school abroad: the full-day Swedish curriculum, a state grant from Skolverket and checks by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate.

What the badge means for this school. This is a Swedish school abroad: it teaches the full-day Swedish curriculum, and Skolverket gives it a state grant - this can be seen in its grant decisions. The entry is not a quality inspection. The curriculum and the qualifications are Swedish. Whom the school admits and what it charges are on its own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

Swedish programme

The Swedish school curriculum taught in Swedish: förskoleklass, the compulsory grundskola under the Lgr22 curriculum and, at some schools, the upper-secondary gymnasieskola leading to the Swedish gymnasieexamen.

What this means for this school. The curriculum is set by the Swedish state: the school follows the Swedish curriculum, receives state funding through Skolverket and is checked by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate. A child who returns to Sweden carries on without switching from another system.

Exams and destinations from the school's official website

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

Campus: The school is in a quiet car-free area of Los Cristianos right by the sea; the beach is used for play, PE and outdoor lessons. There is a fully equipped workshop for woodwork and textiles with machines and ceramics (6 potter's wheels and a kiln), a home economics room with two kitchens, a music room with guitars, bass, drums, ukuleles and keyboards, a separate Spanish and art classroom, and a roof terrace with games, a playhouse, a table tennis table and a pool. Swimming and athletics take place at municipal stadiums. Lunch is cooked daily by the neighbouring restaurant for the school only: dishes from various cuisines, a salad bar, a vegetarian option, with gluten and lactose intolerances catered for. Lessons run Monday to Thursday from 8:30 to 15:00 and on Friday until 13:00; younger pupils move to after-school care after lessons. It is a day school; families rent their own accommodation, and the school suggests agents.
Clubs and activities: Idrottsklass (sports class for Years 5-12 in October-November)

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
