World Academy of Tirana is a private day school in Lunder, a suburb of Tirana, and the first IB authorised school in Albania. It was founded by Mirlinda Boshnjaku, who had earlier founded the International Montessori School of Albania: parents of its nursery asked for a continuation, and in 2010 the school opened with six students in two villas in central Tirana; the home page says the school has operated since 2013. Within four years it grew to 175 students, and on 4 September 2015 it moved into its own building in Lunder with 210 students. Today almost 500 children of 38 nationalities study here; children of expatriate and local families learn together. The secondary school opened in 2012. The school has offered the PYP since its authorisation in 2014, the MYP since 2017, and also the IB Diploma, so all three IB programmes run continuously from age 5 to 18. Lessons are taught in English, as the school states directly, with EAL support for non-native speakers. Albanian and French are taught as subjects from primary, and the staff page also lists a German teacher. For students joining after the Albanian Matura in Grade 9 the school runs a Pre-DP foundation year in Grade 10, which it calls the first in the country. The campus covers more than 4700 square metres: over forty classrooms, labs, four libraries, an indoor gym, a dance studio, a music hall, art and design studios, a 400 square metre multi-sports court and a cafeteria with over 200 seats.

About the fees Tuition for 2026-2027 in euros: PYP Early Years (age 5) 7300, PYP 1 and PYP 2 9300, PYP 3 - PYP 5 9870, MYP 1 and MYP 2 11350, MYP 3 - MYP 5 11500, DP 1 13950, DP 2 14370. On top of this a guarantee fee of 1000 euros is paid every year by 1 April. Tuition is paid in two equal instalments, on 1 June and 10 December. Up to MYP 5 meals are included: three a day in Early Years and two a day after that; in the DP meals are not included and can be ordered. DP tuition includes an IB external exams fee of 1000 euros. Paying the full year by 15 April gives an 8 percent discount. Payment in lek is possible at the Bank of Albania rate.
Admissions The school calls itself non-selective and admits children aged 5 to 18 of any nationality, religion and background, while keeping a balance of nationalities and language groups. The registration fee includes student visa assistance for international students. Steps: enquiry, school tour, online application, assessment and interview, offer and contract. Required: application form, medical questionnaire, two 3x4 cm photos, passport copies of the child and both parents with visa pages, school reports for the last two years and, if available, a psycho-educational evaluation. There are no English requirements up to and including Grade 8 (MYP 3); from Grade 9 the school warns that weak English makes study harder. Secondary applicants have an interview and a four-part English test, whose result does not affect admission but sets the level of support. The IB Diploma needs very good English. Albanian nationals additionally follow Ministry of Education requirements in Albanian language and literature, history and geography. Children with special needs are considered case by case and admitted if the school can meet them; EAL and SEN support may cost extra. Partial scholarships are offered to MYP 5 and DP 1 students on application by 30 June: a personal statement, English and Maths exams and an interview with the Secondary Principal.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

Ariston Educationschool network

An international education group that describes itself as a growing global education group with a portfolio of schools, headquartered in London. Its own figures give eight countries and fifteen schools; we count fourteen, because the two Baleares International College entries, Sa Porrassa and Sant Agusti, are two campuses of one school - shared domain, shared name, shared accreditation and page paths under /campus/ - although the group itself lists them as two schools. All eight countries: Albania, China, Ecuador, Hungary, Mexico, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain - 128 nationalities and more than 6,800 students; on individual school pages the same group describes its reach more broadly, as Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas, and both descriptions are given here as the group gives them. The group applies its own Value Creation Plan to each school while leaving the school, in its own words, full autonomy over teaching and culture. Until 2024 the group was called Orbital Education Group, and the former name still appears on the schools' own pages and in BSO inspection reports. What the group's site nowhere states: whether it owns the schools or manages them - the words portfolio, investment and school partnerships do not settle that distinction, and that silence is recorded here rather than filled in.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
