Samakkhiwitthayakhom is a large state secondary school in central Chiang Rai. It has been running since 1908 and teaches around three and a half thousand pupils from ม.1 to ม.6. The school calls itself one of the first state schools in the province, and its motto is "unity is strength". Alongside the ordinary classes it runs an international programme: every subject except Thai is taught by native speakers with assistants and co-teachers, classes hold no more than twenty-five pupils, and a third language is compulsory on top of Thai and English. Entry to the programme is by examinati, which the school also provides in English translati, and the programme is meant for pupils who intend to study at universities abroad. Among its after-school activities the programme lists golf, tennis, an international music club and a choir, and in the holidays it takes pupils to camps - first around Thailand, then around Asia, then further afield.
