Aula Escola Europea is a private, non-denominational and independent school in a Barcelona district at the foot of Collserola, running since 1968. It was founded by Pere Ribera i Ferran, who had spent almost thirty years at the French Lycée of Barcelona, and it was conceived as an experimental centre with a heuristic bent: not memorising but discovery, logical reasoning and critical thinking. The school runs its own curriculum from two to eighteen and rests on two pillars - plurilingualism and an all-round education. It takes on plenty of languages: Catalan, Castilian, English and French are studied so that a leaver can continue their studies in any of them. The grounds are 23500 square metres on the edge of the Oreneta park and the Collserola natural park, with three separate buildings and kitchens and dining rooms of its own. The senior stage leads to the IB Diploma Programme, which the school describes as marked out of 45. The main thing a parent needs to know: the fee is paid in ten monthly instalments and almost doubles as the stages go up - from 560 euros in the kindergarten to 910 in the final years - and a one-off entry fee is paid on joining. The school teaches in four languages - Catalan, Spanish, English and French - each of them both a subject and the language of other lessons; in secondary, for example, physics is taught in English in one of the ESO years.

About the fees The fee for the 2026/27 school year is paid in ten monthly instalments. Kindergarten: the J2 group 640 euros a month, the J3, J4 and J5 groups 560 each. Primary school: 650 euros a month in years one to five, 705 in year six. Secondary school and baccalaureate: 705, 705, 800, 800, 910 and 910 euros a month by year. The fee covers all outings except the annual residential trip. On top of the fee: the dining room (lunch and afternoon snack) 181 euros a month, transport 172 or 183 euros a month depending on the route and 27 euros a month for a separate service. The entry fee is paid once for the whole of a child's schooling and depends on the stage at which the child joined: kindergarten, primary and ESO 2500 euros, baccalaureate 3500 euros. Children of former pupils get a 50 per cent discount on it.
Admissions Enrolment is open all year, and a child can join at any stage if there is a place. The procedure depends on the stage. For the nursery the family comes to an information session and then to a personal visit. For primary there is a personal visit and entrance tests. For secondary and the baccalaureate there is an in-person information meeting, entrance tests (the next ones are set for Wednesday 13 January 2027, in the afternoon) and an interview with the coordination team and the head of the stage; the next information meeting for secondary is on Monday 14 December 2026 at 18:00. The one-off entry fee is described in the fees section. The school says nothing about foreigners, citizenship or knowledge of Catalan or Spanish as a condition of entry.
Stages and year groups Grades kindergarten J2 from age 2 - the second year of the baccalaureate, up to age 18. The school's own educational project runs from two to eighteen. It deliberately calls the kindergarten the Garden - J2, J3, J4 and J5 - drawing on the principles of the Kindergarten. Then comes primary school, with year six already sharing a building with the secondary school. Secondary school and the baccalaureate run as one block, and five cross-cutting axes run through every subject of every year from year six of primary to year four of ESO: computational thinking, mathematics, literature with humanistic formation, plurilingualism, and psycho-emotional together with academic support. The baccalaureate adds subject choice and preparation for the various university entrance examinations.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

Campus: The school grounds occupy 23500 square metres right on the edge of the Oreneta park and the Collserola natural park, with a view over the city; the school notes separately that its location gives it good air quality. There are three separate buildings - kindergarten, primary, and secondary with the baccalaureate - and every classroom has natural light and equipment matched to the age of the pupils: in the kindergarten each group has its own terrace and its own playground. Besides classrooms there are specialist rooms, laboratories, kitchens and dining rooms, a media library, seminar rooms, auditoriums, outdoor areas and sports areas. The secondary and primary buildings and the sports pavilion were built between 2003 and 2009, when the kindergarten building was also renovated.
Clubs and activities: Basketball · Futsal · Volleyball · Handball
Summer camp: the school runs its own camp and takes children from outside as well
Summer programme away from campus: A week in the Pyrenees for children from 10 to 15
In summer the school runs three programmes under the name Aula Estiu, all open both to its own pupils and to children from elsewhere. Aula Campus de Verano is a summer day camp for children from 2 to 12, built on play and living together. Aula Colonias de Verano is a week in the Pyrenees for children from 10 to 15: mountain sports, hiking, orienteering and environmental education. Aula Deporte de Verano is a sports programme for children from 8 to 16, with technique, tactics and game sessions. Registration runs through a separate summer programmes site, while the school's own families sign up through its app. The page gives no dates, timetable or prices.

The school does not publish the number of its teachers but describes how the team works. Each group has its own tutor, a steady adult who follows the child. In the nursery and primary there are specialist teachers of foreign languages (in the nursery the school says plainly that they are native speakers), computational thinking, music, art and physical education; in primary two teachers work in the classroom at once for part of the lessons, and in the nursery groups are split in half for some sessions. In secondary and the baccalaureate all subject teachers are specialists in their field. A psycho-pedagogical guidance department with a psychologist looks after pupils' wellbeing. For its teachers the school runs its own research programme, Aula Recerca: every year teachers lead research projects.

Safety and wellbeing from the school's official website

The school says nothing on its website about security, medical care or pupil support.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
