Colegio Arenas Internacional is a private secular school in the resort of Costa Teguise on Lanzarote. It was founded in 1986 by a group of parents so that the island would have better schooling, and since 1995 it has belonged to AISGROUP - a Canarian network of private secular schools without state funding that were the first to introduce bilingual education; the school calls itself the first bilingual school on the island. Teaching is bilingual, Spanish and English: at every stage some subjects are taught in Spanish and some in English. German is added from the 2nd year and Chinese from the 3rd, and in all three foreign languages the school prepares for official examinations - Cambridge from Movers to Advanced and IELTS, the Goethe-Institut and YCT. Since 2008 the school has been an IB "Colegio del Mundo", and it runs all three programmes in a row: the primary one from 3 to 12, the middle one from 12 to 16 and the Diploma from 16 to 18. Children are taken from six months. The campus covers about 7000 m2 with a swimming pool, a padel court, an artificial-grass pitch, a judo room, a ballet studio and the covered Aqua & Sports Center pavilion, its own kitchen and gardens. The group has its own centre, Sulis Manor, in Bath in England, where the school takes pupils in summer and for the autumn term. The school publishes results: in the 2024 EBAU half of its pupils scored more than 11 points out of 14, and it says that everyone passes the IB Diploma.

Admissions The school begins admission with an application form on its website, after which the admissions team contacts the family and guides it through the whole process; the aim, it says, is to understand the future pupil's family and academic situation. Children are taken from six months up to the bachillerato. The school publishes no deadlines, tests, list of documents or language requirements, and describes no separate procedure for children from other countries.
Stages and year groups Grades Infantil from 6 months - 2nd year of the bachillerato. The stages run right through: Infantil from six months, primary school, ESO and the bachillerato. The IB programmes cover the whole path: the primary programme (PEP) - the second cycle of nursery and primary school, ages 3 to 12; the middle programme (PAI) - ESO, ages 12 to 16; the Diploma (PD) - the bachillerato, ages 16 to 18, over two years. There is an extended day. The school does not publish its daily timetable.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

Arenas International Schoolsschool network

Arenas International Schools (AIS Group) is a private family-run group of schools in the Canary Islands; on the site of its Gran Canaria school the group says it began to develop in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1940, when the teachers Lucía Pérez and Antonio Ojeda founded Colegio Arenas, and that the work was continued by their daughter and then the third generation of the family. We did not find a separate site for the group: the list of AIS Group centres is published on the Gran Canaria school's site. In Spain these are Colegio Arenas (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, nursery, infant and primary) and Colegio Arenas Atlántico (Arucas, secondary and Bachillerato) in Gran Canaria, and Colegio Arenas Internacional in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote; the group also includes the Arenas Albéniz music conservatoire, the Aqua & Sports centres and the Sulis Manor centre in Bath, England. The two group sites give different dates for the Lanzarote school: the Gran Canaria site says it was founded in 1995, while the school's own site says it was founded by a group of parents in 1986 and has been a member of AISGROUP since 1996; we quote both. The sites are aisgrancanaria.com and aislanzarote.com.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
