Colegio Arenas Sur is a private trilingual school of the Canary Islands' Arenas group in the south of Gran Canaria, in Maspalomas. The school speaks of more than thirty-five years of its own history and more than eighty-five years for the Arenas institution as a whole. Of the IB programmes it holds the diploma: at the upper stage the school writes outright "BACHILLERATO - IBDP", while it does not name the primary or middle years IB programmes for itself - unlike other schools in the group, and that is the main thing a parent of a younger child should know. The trilingualism works like this: English is not a subject but a language of instruction ("mucho más que impartir inglés"), and the school takes pupils through to the Oxford Test of English and the Cambridge range from YLE and KET up to CPE; on top of that there are external examinations in German. The school describes its method as a combination of STEAM, IB programmes and cooperative learning.
Key facts
Tuition
≈ $6 778–10 168 a year
600–900 EUR a month
The year is counted as ten payments: the school does not say how many payments it takes.
Languages of instruction
Spanish, English
About the fees The school states its fee on its admission page as a range: the all-inclusive monthly cost of schooling - tuition, lunch, materials - runs from 600 to 900 euros depending on the stage; exact amounts are given on enquiry. It has its own bursary programme, including an academic excellence scholarship, and outside grants for some stages.
Admissions Admission is open all year, and a pupil can join mid-year if the stage has a place; the school advises applying early, especially for the nursery and primary, where demand is high. There are four steps: a form on the site, after which the admissions officer contacts the family; an information meeting and a school tour by appointment, and for families living abroad an online interview; a personal interview with the family and an entrance test for the pupil (at some stages an initial level assessment); and, once a place is granted, completing the enrolment. The school lists documents separately for Spanish pupils and for foreigners: EU citizens bring copies of the passports and NIE of the parents and child, citizens of other countries copies of passports and residence permits; from age 15 an academic certificate is also needed. If there are more applications than places, the order of application, the number of places per class and the pupil's fit with the school's project decide; siblings of pupils have priority. Taking part in admission does not guarantee a place.
Stages and year groups The school lists its stages in its own menu: nursery and kindergarten (maternal-nursery), Educación Infantil, Educación Primaria, Educación Secundaria and Bachillerato, where the IB Diploma Programme runs. The pages read give no age grid and no timetable of the day.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
