Colegio Ramón y Cajal is a private school in the Arturo Soria district of Madrid, founded in 1961 by José Luis Sanz Sánchez; from 1996 it was led by his son Mariano Sanz Montesa, and since 2024 the school has belonged to the international Inspired group, with Belén Muñoz Viejo, a former pupil and long-standing deputy head, as head. The school teaches children from 4 months to 18 years: a nursery in two separate buildings, primary, ESO and the Baccalaureate. It combines the Spanish curriculum with IB programmes: the PYP for ages 3-12, the MYP and the Diploma Programme; the 2026 IB Diploma cohort was its second. Teaching is bilingual, in Spanish and English; French is added from nursery, as well as Chinese and German, and there are trips to the USA, Ireland, France and Germany. According to the school, in 2026 everyone passed the IB Diploma with an average of 34 points, and everyone passed the university entrance examination with an average mark of 10,92 out of 14; more than 90 per cent of leavers enter their first-choice degree. The newspaper El Mundo ranked it first among schools in Spain, and it holds the EFQM +600 seal. There is a psycho-pedagogical team, the CRECEMOCIÓN emotional development programme, its own music school and summer camps. The school publishes its fees itself, monthly, in euros.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

Inspiredschool network

Inspired Education Group is a private school group founded in 2013. The group gives different figures on its own pages - 125 schools on some, "more than 100" on others - and we quote both: choosing for a group which of its own numbers is correct is not something we do. Its schools are in Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and some of them keep their own historic names, such as King's College in Madrid and Riga. The group's site is inspirededu.com.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

Campus: The school is in the residential Arturo Soria district with good transport links. The main building, fully renovated in 2015, houses the administration, primary, secondary and the Baccalaureate; a few metres away are separate nursery buildings for ages 0-3 and 3-6. The new Mi Primer CRC building is built to be sustainable: cross ventilation in classrooms, underfloor heating with aerothermal energy, solar panels, natural paints and wooden materials; solar panels are also fitted on the other buildings. In 2022 the laboratories were enlarged, with more microscopes, emergency showers, a fume cupboard and a reagent store. The Centro Arturo Soria sports complex and the López de Hoyos children's centre are also used in summer. A dining hall with menus by dieticians, and school buses on routes set according to families' needs.

The school has a team of psycho-pedagogues: from the early years it monitors learning difficulties, runs individual sessions, advises families and teachers, and helps older pupils choose a university. The CRECEMOCIÓN programme develops emotional intelligence in all years, and the personal growth school runs training for pupils, parents and teachers. The contract terms allow the school, in exceptional cases and where there is reasonable concern for pupils' safety, to request a drug and alcohol test. The school does not mention on its website a medical worker, video surveillance, security guards or a written child protection policy.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
