École française Alexandre-Dumas is a French school in Naples, an annex of the Lycée Chateaubriand de Rome in the AEFE network, accredited by the French Ministry of Education. It was founded in the 1950s by officers of the French mission to NATO and has operated as a French school since 1972. It is housed in the Palazzo Grenoble together with the French Consulate General and the French Institute. Teaching is in French following French Ministry of Education programmes: pre-school from age 2, primary school and collège up to grade 3 of collège (troisième), where students take the brevet; the school says all its students pass it. Students can then continue at the Lycée Chateaubriand in Rome up to the baccalauréat (including ESABAC) or move into the Italian system after the terza media exam. Italian is compulsory from the youngest pre-school group for 3 hours a week with a native teacher, English from pre-school, and Spanish and Latin are added in collège; the school holds the AEFE PARLE language label and prepares students for the Cambridge English KET and PET exams and for DELF. About 200 students of all nationalities attend in 7 primary and 4 secondary classes.

About the fees Annual fees for 2026-2027 are the same for French, Italian and other students: pre-school and primary 7694 EUR, collège 8500 EUR (the lycée in Rome 8890 EUR). Fees are invoiced each term. In 2026-2027 fees in Naples rose by 8-10% depending on the level. Discounts for three or more children enrolled by one parent: 10% for three, 20% for four, 30% for five or more. There is a financial support fund for families.
Admissions Online pre-registration for the current year is always open, for all levels; required documents include a birth certificate, ID for the child and both parents, the child's Italian tax code, bank details, a current school certificate and report cards. The school does not accept students whose parents do not live in Italy during their schooling. The youngest group admits children who are 2 by September, the PS group children who are 3 by 31 December, and grade 1 (CP) children who are 6 by 31 December. Students from French state schools and accredited French schools abroad move up according to their previous school's decision; others, even from French-speaking schools, take a compulsory placement test. Submitting an application is not enrolment: places are limited and a sibling's place is not guaranteed; enrolment is confirmed after the last report card and payment of the first registration fee. Fees are the same for students of any nationality. Children with at least one Italian parent must study Italian language and culture until collège under the 1949 Franco-Italian cultural agreement.

What stands behind each entry

AEFEAgency for French Education Abroad

It runs the network of French schools worldwide, while the accreditation itself, the homologation, is granted by the French education ministry and inspected by French state inspectors. A leaver from a homologated school moves into a school in France without an entrance examination. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

French programme

The state programme of France. A school is homologated by the French ministry of education, and a leaver may move into a school in France without entrance tests. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What this means for this school. Which year groups of this school are covered by homologation - only the primary ones, or all the way to the final year - is not stated here. The difference matters: it decides whether the school takes a child through to the French baccalaureate or hands them on to another school halfway.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
