Escuela Libre Los Lazarillos is a small private school in Seville, started in 2010 by two educators, Isabel Abad and Chelo Távora. It calls itself a foreign private educational centre recognised by the American association NEASC, and the first alternative school in the city of Seville to hold that accreditation; its ideology is declared in three words - free, secular, democratic. The method is its own, assembled from variants of Montessori and Waldorf: the school says plainly that its formula is changing and experimental, built on observation and on a balance between what the children teach the educators and what the educators guide the children through. The school currently covers two stages - infant and primary - and from 2026/27 it is opening a secondary stage as well. Teaching is in Spanish, but the stated aim is bilingual, and English sits among the planned activities of the day alongside the vegetable garden, music, brain gym and dance. The day is not run by the bell: the school opens between eight and a quarter past, the whole group has gathered by ten, then comes a shared breakfast, a "greeting to the sun" with yoga exercises, then "concentration" - work with materials from the shelves, alone, in pairs or in threes, for no more than an hour - then a free choice between the two yards, the field area and activities indoors, around half past twelve a planned activity, and by half past one a shared lunch, after which the children wash up themselves in pairs and by established turns. The main thing a parent needs to know: the school gives no address in text on its site - it can only be taken from the embedded map - and it publishes no fees, no admission age and no number of pupils at all.

Admissions The school opened admission for 2026/27 with a blog post of 20 March 2026, and reduces the procedure to booking an appointment: telephone Isabel on the number given or write to the school's email address and ask for a meeting. The school names no examinations, assessments or enrolment fees; there is also an occasional open day. The school does not write about foreigners or citizenship.
Stages and year groups Grades infant and primary; secondary from 2026/27. The school covers two stages - infant and primary - and has announced the opening of a secondary stage from the 2026/27 school year. The group is mixed-age and the work is done with materials from the shelves by the children's own choice. The day: opening between 8:00 and 8:15, the whole group gathered by 10:00, a shared breakfast, around 10:30 the "greeting to the sun" with yoga exercises and a shared circle, then "concentration" for up to an hour - individually, in pairs or in groups of three or four - by 11:30-12:00 a free choice between the two outdoor yards, the field area and activities indoors, around 12:30 a planned activity - garden, music, brain gym, English or dance - and by 13:30 lunch: most children bring food from home in a flask and the rest have catering, and the children wash the dishes themselves in pairs and by turns.

What stands behind each entry

NEASCNew England Association of Schools and Colleges

An American accreditation working since 1885. For international schools it uses an approach where the visitors look first at live lessons rather than at folders of paperwork: the team works in the school for about a week. It is the only one here whose public directory honestly separates accredited schools from candidates.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

Campus: The school is arranged as an extension of a home: the rooms are adapted to different educational activities, the walls are decorated with the pupils' own work, and there is a separate library - which doubles as a rest and research room - with direct access to the green area. Outside there are two open yards and a field area, which the children go out to after changing their shoes. A tortoise called Ramona lives at the school, and greeting her is how the day begins.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
