European School RheinMain (ESRM) is a private not-for-profit school in Bad Vilbel, just outside Frankfurt am Main, accredited by the Board of Governors of the European Schools: it follows the common European Schools curriculum and leads to the European Baccalaureate, which is recognised in Germany as equivalent to the Abitur. The school opened in 2012 with 407 students and now has more than 1700 children from 70 countries, from kindergarten (from age 4) to grade 12. The European track runs in two language sections, German and English: core subjects are taught in the section language, the first foreign language (German, English or French) is compulsory from grade 1, history and geography are taught in the first foreign language from secondary year 3, a second foreign language starts in secondary year 1 and a third from year 4. Since 2021 there has also been an IB track taught in English: the Middle Years Programme for grades 6-10 and, since 2024, the Diploma Programme for grades 11-12; all subjects except the second language are taught in English. In 2026 all 130 graduates passed the European Baccalaureate with an average of 80%. Fees depend on family income and, according to the school, are significantly lower than at most private and international schools in the region.

About the fees Fees are monthly and depend on annual family income; the application forms state the fees are valid until further notice, and no school year is given. Primary (grades 1-4) and grades 5-10: from 300 EUR per month at an income up to 40000 EUR to 800 EUR at an income from 100000 EUR; grades 11-12: from 400 to 1100 EUR per month (income from 110000 EUR). IB track: from 300 EUR per month at an income up to 40000 EUR to 1200 EUR in the MYP and 1400 EUR in the Diploma Programme at an income up to 140000 EUR. Kindergarten: from 450 to 900 EUR per month at an income from 80000 EUR; the Hessen state subsidy is deducted automatically (135.60 EUR per month on the English section form, 149.16 EUR for 2024 on the admissions page), and families whose main residence is outside Hessen do not receive it. Fees are paid in four instalments of 25% (1 June, 1 September, 1 December and later). A second child gets 25% off at an income up to 180000 EUR, a third and fourth child 50% at incomes up to 230000 and 280000 EUR; where needed the school reduces fees and grants a full fee waiver (scholarship), usually for one child per family.
Admissions The school admits all interested students regardless of the parents' employer: it is the first European School with open admission. Students promoted to the next grade at a state or equivalent grammar school in an EU member state are enrolled without further conditions after an interview with them and their parents. Children without such promotion and those coming from outside Europe have a separate interview, after which the school decides whether admission is possible or an entrance test is needed. The school stresses that it does not select students and aims to lead every student to the Baccalaureate. The kindergarten takes children aged 4 and 5; grade P1 starts in September of the year the child turns 6; enrolment in S7 is only possible for students who passed S6 at a European School. Applications are made on separate forms for the German and English sections (kindergarten, primary, secondary) and for the IB track; to move from MYP 5 to the Diploma Programme students complete the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at bronze level.
Stages and year groups Grades Pre-Primary, P1-P5, S1-S7; IB MYP 1-5, DP 1-2. What stands behind each entry

European SchoolsThe European Union's European Schools (Schola Europaea)

An intergovernmental system of European Union schools with its own curriculum and its own certificate, the European Baccalaureate. It runs thirteen schools of its own, and national schools gain the status of Accredited European School after an audit with a visit by inspectors. The certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country.

What the badge means for this school. The school runs the European Schools curriculum, and this can be checked in the system's lists at eursc.eu. The system's own schools are checked by inspectors from EU countries, accredited schools pass an in-school audit, and accreditation is renewed every three years. Whether the school awards the European Baccalaureate, and whom it admits, is stated on its own page. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

European Baccalaureate

The European Union's European Schools curriculum from nursery to the final year, with the European Baccalaureate as the leaving certificate. Teaching is in language sections, and a second language is compulsory from primary school.

What this means for this school. The curriculum and the certificate are set by the European Schools system, whose Board of Governors is made up of the education ministers of the EU countries. European Baccalaureate papers are marked by the teacher and an external examiner, and the certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country and in several others. A school may award it only if it is one of the system's own schools or is accredited for the senior years.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
