GIBS (Graz International Bilingual School, officially Bundesgymnasium Georgigasse) is a public bilingual Gymnasium in Graz: "GIBS is a bilingual (German-English) senior secondary school for students aged 10-18. At present the school comprises more than 600 students and over 60 teaching staff". Lessons are in English under "flexible monolingualism": the first three months are intensive English, then all lessons are in English with German support; a student may choose German or English as the main language of assessment, except for the Matura final exam. Children from German-speaking countries learn German as a first language, others as a foreign language. The school charges no tuition: "Unlike other international schools Graz International Bilingual School (\"GIBS\") is a state school that does not charge tuition fees for students". In Grades 11-12 students can earn both the IB Diploma and the Austrian Standardisierte Reifeprüfung. The school has more than 20 nationalities, is a UNESCO Associated School, and its students take part in Erasmus+ exchanges.

About the fees Tuition is free: "Graz International Bilingual School (\"GIBS\") is a state school that does not charge tuition fees for students". Separate contributions are described under fees.
Admissions The school is public, places are few and not everyone is admitted: "Due to the number of applications and the limited capacity of the school we are not able to accept all the children who apply". Year 1 (Grade 5 of the Austrian system) takes three classes of 25 students from Graz and the surrounding area: online application in December, primary school grades and an interview in English and German are considered, siblings of students have priority. Children educated abroad submit their last two reports. In Years 2-6 (Grades 6-10) places open only when students leave, and waiting lists are kept; applicants need reports, a passport copy and proof of residence in Styria or an employment contract; tests in Mathematics and English and an interview; priority goes to strong test results and families relocating to Styria for work. The IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12) admits "by selection": "Styrian residency, the evaluation of interview results, previous academic performance, and on the number of places available"; international students may apply at any time, but places are given only at the end of the school year, the student and a parent must reside in Styria, and fluency in English or German is required; tests in Mathematics, English and German. German (A, B or ab initio) is compulsory in the IB.
Stages and year groups A Gymnasium with Years 1-8 (Grades 5-12 of the Austrian system, ages 10-18). Years 6-8 (Grades 10-12) use the Course System (since the 1999-2000 school year): core and elective courses, 68 credits are needed for the Matura. The school leaving qualification is the "Standardisierte Reifeprüfung" (Austrian Matura). The IB Diploma Programme runs in Grades 11-12 (preparation in Grade 10): "GIBS IBDP students will acquire two diplomas, the IBDP and the Austrian Standardisierte Reifeprüfung". The IB is a track inside the school for selected students: the school's own students apply in Grade 9, external students through international admissions.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.
What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
