International School Innsbruck (ISI) is not a separate school but the international bilingual stream of the state grammar school Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck (AGI) in central Innsbruck; the school describes it as "an integrated stream of learning within the publicly funded school - Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck". AGI was founded in 1562 and has taught bilingually since 1996. The stream starts at school level 5 (age 10-11) and runs to level 12: in the last two years students follow the Austrian curriculum with the Matura (Reifeprüfung) in parallel with the IB Diploma Programme. Instruction is in English and German: the school says English is the instructional language in the learning areas ("English as the instructional language"), while German remains the language of the Austrian curriculum and the Matura; international students get extra German support. The secondary section of Accredited European School Tyrol (European Schools system) runs in the same building under the same leadership; the AGI website labels it "AES - Tirol am International School Innsbruck". ISI graduates score well above the world average in the IB: in May 2023 the cohort average was 33 of 45 points.

About the fees The stream runs within a state grammar school and the school names no separate tuition fee, but says the programme is "associated with further financial expenses", partly covered by government funding. Membership of the Unterstützungsverein ISI (ISI support association) is obligatory for all ISI parents: "The membership fee is € 50 per month calculated over 10 months. A direct debit of €250 bi-annually is required", i.e. 500 euros a year.
Admissions The school admits Austrian and international children, with two conditions. First, the right to live in Austria: "The school is open to all students who have obtained the right to reside in Austria and can fulfill the entrance requirements". Second, the child lives with the parents near Innsbruck: "Children who apply for a place at International School Innsbruck must live with their parent/s in the near-lying region of Innsbruck. ISI does not consider international students for admission who live with relatives, family friends or in student homes". Entry to year 1 of the stream (school level 5): 50% primary school report (AHS-Reife), 25% language creativity test in German or English, 25% interview; with a non-Austrian report a Maths placement test is added, and applicants without sufficient German or English may be refused. Later years: placement tests in Mathematics, German and English. Applications for year 1 are in February; for international families the timing is agreed with the ISI coordinator, and there is an online application for "International Students Only". Siblings of current students get preference.
Stages and year groups Grades 5-12. Austrian school levels 5-12: Middle Years College (Unterstufe, 5-8) and Senior Years College (Oberstufe, 9-12). In years 11-12 the Austrian grammar school curriculum with the compulsory Matura ("Österreichische Matura", Reifeprüfungszeugnis) runs in parallel with the IB Diploma Programme: "Alongside the compulsory Austrian School Leaving Examination (Österreichische Matura) students have the opportunity, in their final year, to graduate from the IB Diploma Programme". The IB Diploma is optional; students may take individual IB certificates instead. External IB DP applicants are assessed individually and need competent English.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries
IB · DP · authorised programmeThe IB register lists the Diploma Programme at the school. ISI is the international stream of the state grammar school Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck: pupils take the IB Diploma and the Austrian Matura. The upper stage of the Accredited European School Tyrol works in the same building, but follows a different curriculum, that of the European Schools.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.
What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Where leavers go: King's College London

Reviews
No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
