IES Gerardo Diego is a public secondary school in Pozuelo de Alarcón near Madrid, bilingual in Spanish and English under the Community of Madrid programme. Its history begins in the 1960s as a branch of the Madrid school Cardenal Cisneros in the La Estación district; in October 1974 it appeared in the official gazette as the Instituto Nacional de Bachillerato de Pozuelo de Alarcón, and it took the name of the poet Gerardo Diego later. Today the school works in a new building on Calle Irlanda. Its stages are ESO and the baccalaureate. In ESO there are two bilingual tracks, Programa and Sección, with some subjects in English and external Cambridge examinations in year 4; since 2022, starting from the first year of ESO, the school has run the IB Middle Years Programme. In the baccalaureate there are three routes to choose from: the ordinary Spanish one, the baccalaureate of excellence with a research project and, for the first time from the 2026-2027 school year, the IB Diploma Programme, for which the school was authorised in December 2025. The Diploma runs together with the Spanish baccalaureate in three strands: science and technology, science and health, and social sciences, 33-35 hours a week. The school takes part in the European Jean Monnet programme for 2025-2028 and takes ESO pupils on language trips.

About the fees The school, as a public one, provides ESO and the ordinary baccalaureate under the general rules of the Community of Madrid and names no fee for them on its website. For the IB Diploma Programme the school names an enrolment fee: 750 euros for the 2026-2027 school year, not refunded in any case; the payment receipt is handed in with the documents at enrolment. Retaking an IB subject, the school says, is paid separately.
Admissions Admission to ESO and the ordinary baccalaureate follows the general procedure of the Community of Madrid. Applicants to the bilingual section from non-bilingual schools must prove their English: B1 for years 1 and 2 of ESO, B2 for years 3 and 4, otherwise a test at the school. For the IB Diploma Programme in 2026-2027 the conditions are: an average mark of at least 7 for year 3 of ESO and the first term of year 4, at least 6 in English, completion of ESO with no failed subjects, no repeated year 3 or 4, and an English certificate of at least B2 by September. Places go first to pupils of the school itself and its attached schools, and the remaining ones to pupils of other public, private and state-funded schools; when places are contested, applicants are ranked on 15 points. The school expressly admits pupils who studied abroad: their marks are converted to the Spanish system, and the conversion is attached to the application. Applications are submitted from 11 to 25 March, and the final list comes out on 27 May.
Stages and year groups Grades Year 1 of ESO - 2nd year of baccalaureate. The school runs ESO from year 1 to year 4 and the baccalaureate. In ESO there are the bilingual Programa and Sección tracks under order 972/2017 of the Community of Madrid; the IB Middle Years Programme was introduced from 2022 starting with year 1 of ESO and lasts five years, the last two being year 4 of ESO and the first year of the baccalaureate. The baccalaureate comes in three forms: the ordinary Spanish one (30-31 hours a week), the baccalaureate of excellence with evening seminars and a research project (31 hours) and the IB Diploma Programme together with the Spanish baccalaureate (33-35 hours). The Diploma runs in three strands: science and technology, science and health, and social sciences. At least 15 pupils are needed to open a group in an optional subject.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
