The Real Instituto de Jovellanos is a public secondary school in the centre of Gijón and one of the oldest in Spain. It was conceived by the Enlightenment figure Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos as a school of navigation and mineralogy: a royal order of 1792 named Gijón as its seat, and the Real Instituto Asturiano was formally opened on 7 January 1794. It has carried its present name, Instituto de Jovellanos, since 1865, has worked as a secondary school since 1868 and passed to the state in 1908. Today it is a public school of the education ministry network in Asturias, secular and non-profit, with ESO and baccalaureate stages. In ESO there is a bilingual section: some subjects, from biology to physical education and art, are taught in English; places in it in the first year of ESO are allocated by lot. The school has run the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme without interruption since 1991, in parallel with the Spanish baccalaureate: pupils take both programmes at once, in a science or a humanities strand, with extra hours as a seventh lesson from Monday to Thursday. The four-storey building has a library of more than 25000 volumes, laboratories and a sports ground of more than 11000 square metres. The school takes pride in its extracurricular life: exchanges with the USA, France, Great Britain and Germany, sports teams, a mountain club, theatre and the magazine Aldaba.

Admissions Admission to ESO and the ordinary baccalaureate follows the general rules for public schools in Asturias, on the dates set by the regional education ministry. To the IB Diploma Programme the school admits only on the average mark for years 3 and 4 of ESO: 20 places in the science strand and 10 in humanities and social sciences, and the cut-off mark changes from year to year. Any pupil from Asturias may apply, not only its own: in spring there is pre-registration on the regional dates, at the end of June the marks for years 3 and 4 are submitted, and on 1 July the lists of admitted pupils and the reserve list come out. If the application is not accepted, the pupil does not lose the place at their own school. The school says nothing about admitting foreign pupils.
Stages and year groups Grades Year 1 of ESO - 2nd year of baccalaureate. The school runs compulsory secondary ESO and the baccalaureate. In ESO there is a bilingual section with some subjects in English: in year 1 English, biology and art, in year 2 English, physics and chemistry and physical education, in year 3 English, geography and art, in year 4 English and physical education. The IB Diploma Programme is designed for ages 16-19, that is the 1st and 2nd years of the baccalaureate, and runs together with the Spanish baccalaureate in two strands: science and technology (20 places) and humanities and social sciences (10 places); the week is 33 hours in the first year and 34 in the second. The school does not state class sizes.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
