The Instituto Español de Lisboa Giner de los Ríos (known as Giner or IEL) is a state school of the Kingdom of Spain in Portugal: it is owned and run by the Spanish Ministry of Education through its education office (Consejería de Educación) in Lisbon. It is the oldest of Spain's state schools abroad: it opened in 1932, moved between several buildings in central Lisbon (Rua da Palma, Rua do Salitre, Rua Mouzinho da Silveira, Rua Actor Tasso) and in 1976 moved to the neighbouring municipality of Oeiras, to the former Quinta de São João do Rio estate, known as the Palácio da Cruz Quebrada. The school runs the full Spanish curriculum, from nursery (Educación Infantil) through primary (Primaria) and ESO to the Bachillerato. Teaching is in Spanish: "La lengua vehicular de las enseñanzas es el castellano" ("the language of instruction is Castilian Spanish"). Portuguese is compulsory at every stage and is taught both as a foreign and as a mother tongue; Portuguese history and culture are added to the curriculum. According to the ministry, the school has just over 1000 pupils and 74 teachers.

Admissions The school admits both Spanish and foreign children: teaching "se dirigirán indistintamente al alumnado de nacionalidad española o extranjera" ("is addressed without distinction to pupils of Spanish or foreign nationality"). Admission takes place once a year under rules published by the Embassy's education office, through pre-registration and enrolment within set deadlines. When places are short they are allocated by points, up to 10: link with the Spanish language and culture (up to 3 points: Spanish as dominant mother tongue, at least one full year in the Spanish system, Spanish studied abroad, official Spanish language diplomas), fit with the curriculum (up to 4 points: for nursery and Years 1-2 an interview and readiness assessment, for older pupils academic record, interview and tests), siblings at the school (up to 2 points) and additional criteria (up to 1 point: children of staff of the school or the Spanish Embassy, of Spanish staff of international organisations in Portugal, former pupils and their relatives). At ESO and Bachillerato level there is a Spanish language test which does not exclude anyone ("no tendrá carácter excluyente"). Pupils from another education system bring a record of their studies, and for the Bachillerato an application for recognition of previous studies in Spain (homologación or convalidación). Nursery entry is from age 3. Pupils without Spanish nationality pay the state fee (precios públicos) set by the ministry, in two instalments; persistent non-payment, very poor results, serious discipline problems and absences can cost a pupil their place.
Stages and year groups Grades Educación Infantil (3 años) - 2.º de Bachillerato. The full Spanish state curriculum: Educación Infantil (ages 3, 4 and 5), Educación Primaria (Years 1-6), Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO, Years 1-4) and the Bachillerato; leavers receive the Spanish ESO and Bachillerato certificates. The curriculum is partly adapted to Portugal: Portuguese is compulsory at every stage, and Portuguese history and culture are taught. The pages read do not say which Bachillerato pathways (modalidades) are offered. The school does not award the Portuguese national diploma.

What stands behind each entry

MEFPDMinistry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports of Spain

A school of the Spanish education system abroad: run by the Spanish state, or a private Spanish school supervised by the ministry, or a school under an agreement with the ministry. The curriculum is Spanish, and leavers receive the Spanish certificate. Every such school is named in Spain's state register of schools, each with its own code.

What the badge means for this school. This is a Spanish school abroad, and that can be checked in Spain's state register. The entry is not a quality inspection: a school is on the register as part of the Spanish system, not as the outcome of an assessment. The curriculum and the certificate are Spanish. What other programmes the school offers, and what it charges, are on its own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

Spanish programme

The state school programme of Spain, with the Spanish certificates: ESO at 16 and the Bachiller after the baccalaureate.

What this means for this school. The programme is set by the Spanish Ministry of Education, which also names the school in its state register of schools, in the "abroad" section. Leavers receive Spanish qualifications: the Graduado en ESO after secondary school and the título de Bachiller after the baccalaureate. They are used for entry to Spanish universities; in other countries they are matched to local ones.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
