The International European School Warsaw, named after Jan Kułakowski, is a private school in the Wilanów district of Warsaw, founded in 2002. Two parts share one roof. The first is the bilingual IES school: preschool groups from age 3, a primary school with grades 1 to 8 taught in English and Polish under the Polish and English national curricula, and a high school with grades 9 to 12 taught in English: in grades 9-10 all students prepare for IGCSE exams, then in grades 11-12 they choose between the IB Diploma Programme and A-levels. The second is the Accredited European School (AES), opened under a 2017 agreement mainly for children of staff of European Union institutions: two language sections, English and Polish, with nursery (N1-N2), primary (P1-P5) and secondary (S1-S7) cycles following the European Schools curriculum and leading to the European Baccalaureate. Children whose mother tongue is neither English nor Polish study in the English section; the mother tongue can be taught separately if at least three students request it. At the start of each school year the whole school from grade 2 goes away to an integration camp by the lakes or the sea.

Admissions The school admits children from Poland and abroad: the bilingual IES part states that it educates children from Poland and around the world and offers additional mother tongue lessons for foreign students, and the European AES part is aimed primarily at children of staff of European Union institutions (Category I) but also admits other children at a higher rate (Category III). Steps: contact the school, access to the BlueBoard school platform, an expression of interest form, document upload, review by the admissions committee, a meeting with the family and placement tests where necessary, the head's decision and the tuition contract. All applicants to the IES high school sit an entrance exam in English, Mathematics and one subject of their choice (History, Geography, Biology, Chemistry or Physics), 100 points per part; those with at least 150 points are invited to an interview in English (up to 70 points). At AES children enter nursery in September of the calendar year in which they turn 4, and primary year 1 in the year they turn 6. The school is listed in the IB register and runs the Diploma Programme. The Cambridge register names the school as its centre; it teaches Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level. IGCSE is compulsory for all in grades 9-10; in grades 11-12 students choose between A Level and the IB Diploma. The European Schools system lists it as an Accredited European School: graduates sit the European Baccalaureate.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16), A-Level (ages 16-18). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate. A-Level is the senior years, and their results are what British and many other universities admit on.

European SchoolsThe European Union's European Schools (Schola Europaea)

An intergovernmental system of European Union schools with its own curriculum and its own certificate, the European Baccalaureate. It runs thirteen schools of its own, and national schools gain the status of Accredited European School after an audit with a visit by inspectors. The certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country.

What the badge means for this school. The school runs the European Schools curriculum, and this can be checked in the system's lists at eursc.eu. The system's own schools are checked by inspectors from EU countries, accredited schools pass an in-school audit, and accreditation is renewed every three years. Whether the school awards the European Baccalaureate, and whom it admits, is stated on its own page. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

European Baccalaureate

The European Union's European Schools curriculum from nursery to the final year, with the European Baccalaureate as the leaving certificate. Teaching is in language sections, and a second language is compulsory from primary school.

What this means for this school. The curriculum and the certificate are set by the European Schools system, whose Board of Governors is made up of the education ministers of the EU countries. European Baccalaureate papers are marked by the teacher and an external examiner, and the certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country and in several others. A school may award it only if it is one of the system's own schools or is accredited for the senior years.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
