The International School of Billund (ISB) is a private, independent day school in Billund founded in August 2013 by the LEGO Foundation. The school puts play at the heart of learning: since 2015 it has run the Pedagogy of Play research project, hosts conferences and produces a podcast. It is an IB World School for the PYP and MYP: Kindergarten for ages 3 to 6, Primary School P1-P5 and Middle School M1-M5, equivalent to Danish grades 0-9. The language of instruction is English, as the school states directly; all students learn Danish from P1 for at least three hours a week on two tracks, for native speakers and learners, and Middle School adds German or Spanish. Students represent more than 65 nationalities. ISB holds no Danish leaving exams: it is exempt from them, and students finish M5 with the IB MYP Certificate, which gives direct access to the IB Diploma, while Danish upper secondary schools require a short entrance test. The first class graduated in 2019; graduates go on to the IB Diploma (for example at Kolding Gymnasium), to efterskole, to grade 10 and to technical schools.

About the fees Fees for 2026-2027 are the same for Kindergarten, Primary and Middle School: 3733 kroner per month, 11 payments (no payment in July), due by the 6th of each month. The sibling discount is 40%. Fees include compulsory meals (lunch and snacks) and the Morning Club and After School Club up to P5; trips and holiday care are paid separately.
Admissions Admissions are rolling, and applications are reviewed twice a month. Families first attend a monthly tour; the application requires a birth certificate, passport, school reports for two years and a questionnaire from a chosen referee (for Kindergarten, a caregiver evaluation). The school may hold an interview and assess English, mathematics and learning support needs; diagnoses must be disclosed in advance. Classes keep a low student-to-teacher ratio, so some have waiting lists. When a class is full, priority goes to international children new to Denmark, then siblings of current students, international children already living in Denmark, Danish nationals returning from abroad and finally Danish nationals. Up to P3 children are accepted with no English; from P4 students must quickly reach a high level of English, and Middle School requires a strong foundation in academic English; students normally cannot join in M5 and must start by M4. Kindergarten children may start in the month they turn three. The school reserves the right to decline admission if it judges ISB is not the best fit.
Stages and year groups Grades K1-K2, P1-P5, M1-M5. Kindergarten: three K1 classes (ages 3-5) and two K2 classes (ages 5-6), following the IB PYP together with the Danish tradition of learning through play. Primary School P1-P5 (ages 6-11): the IB PYP built around units of inquiry, plus music, drama, art, Danish and PE. Middle School M1-M5 (ages 11-16): the full IB MYP across eight subject groups, the Personal Project in M4-M5 and on-screen MYP exams and ePortfolios in the final year. Graduates receive the IB MYP Certificate; the school does not hold the Danish folkeskole exams, but students sit a Danish exam under its own programme.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
