The progymnasium on Milda Hill in the Aleksotas district of Kaunas opened on 1 September 1951 as the city's 17th secondary school, starting with 513 students and 28 teachers. In 1977 a new building for 1284 students opened, with an assembly hall, a sports hall, a canteen and a stadium. In 1992 the school was named after the Lithuanian aircraft designer Jurgis Dobkevičius, who died nearby, and a memorial stone marks the spot. Since September 2019 some first-grade classes have followed a bilingual programme based on the IB PYP philosophy: Lithuanian language, maths, history, ethics, arts and IT are taught in Lithuanian, but teachers and assistants are ready to explain in English too; from grade 5 French or German is added, and under the EMILE programme French is integrated into the teaching of specific subjects. The school admits children from the pre-primary class through grade 8 and runs as a full-day school.

Admissions Admission is not competitive but priority-based: in the first wave, 15 March to 27 May, priority goes to children living in the school's catchment area and to children with disabilities or from vulnerable families; in the second wave, 8 June to 15 August, remaining places are filled with no residency requirement. The documents mention children of staff of foreign diplomatic missions and children of resettled families as separate categories, so the school does accept foreign students. No explicit Lithuanian-language requirement for admission is stated on the site, but for the bilingual IB PYP classes each child's case is said to be considered individually.
