Maironis progymnasium in Vilnius' Šeškinė district has a rich history of renamings. It opened in 1979 as School No. 48, the first school in the Šeškinė neighbourhood, and was bilingual, Lithuanian-Russian. In 1980 the Russian-language stream was split off into a separate school (now Sofija Kovalevskaja's school), and Maironis became purely Lithuanian; its first graduating class finished in 1982. By 1990, as the district's population grew and the school had over 2000 pupils, part of the students and teachers were split off to found the new Ozas secondary school. In 1994 the school was renamed Šeškinė secondary school, and in 2015, moving to a shortened stage (grades 1-8 only), it took its current name after the poet Maironis. Over 36 years as a secondary school it graduated 34 classes - 2390 graduates. It is now an IB World School with the PYP (authorized April 3, 2025, grades 2-4) and MYP (candidate status since May 14, 2024, grades 5-8); the progymnasium itself, however, admits children from grade 1, not only from the grade where PYP begins - so the age range on this record is counted for the whole school (grades 1-8), not only the IB section. Teaching is in Lithuanian, with some lessons and topics taught in English through CLIL. The school has a gym, a sports field, a canteen, a library with an electronic catalogue, and separate rooms for children with special needs; it takes part in Erasmus+ projects on inclusion and STEM teaching.

Admissions Admission follows the territorial principle of Vilnius's unified system (svietimas.vilnius.lt): an application can list three schools, one of which must be the family's own catchment school. Current fourth-graders move into fifth grade without going through the general application procedure. The bilingual CLIL classes have a separate selection, based on a general-abilities assessment. The progymnasium does not state a Lithuanian-language requirement or citizenship restriction directly, but teaching is in Lithuanian (with CLIL English elements); there is no sign of a 'citizens only' competition on the site.
