Liceo Frisi is the state scientific liceo of Monza, independent since 1952; from 1945 a branch of a Milan scientific liceo operated here, and in 1955 the liceo took the name of the physicist and mathematician Paolo Frisi. In the 1970s it had branches in nearby towns that later became independent licei in Desio, Vimercate and Lissone. Today it has 47 classes and about 1076 students and more than 80 teachers. There are two tracks, the scientific liceo on the new curriculum and the scientific liceo with applied sciences; within them run Cambridge sections, extra physics, Liceo Matematico, an artificial intelligence strand and a biology course with a biomedical focus for years 3-4. Lessons are in Italian. Since 2019-2020 each of the two tracks has a Cambridge section where some subjects follow Cambridge syllabuses in English: in years 1-2 students prepare for IGCSE exams, in years 3-4 for AS Level exams; in year 5 the section goes on a one-week language trip to Oxford. The liceo takes part in Erasmus+ in a consortium of seven local schools.

About the fees It is a state school and tuition is free. Under the 2022-2023 school year rules families paid a Cambridge course contribution of 650 € a year in years 1-2 (including textbooks, materials and teaching) and 450 € a year in years 3-4 (textbooks excluded); Cambridge exams are paid separately at Cambridge International rates. There is no newer rate on the site. The school council provides help for lower-income families on the basis of an ISEE statement.
Admissions Year 1 enrolment is through the national online procedure (Iscrizioni on-line); families first choose the track (new curriculum or applied sciences) and can then apply for the Cambridge section. All Cambridge applicants take an English test at the end of May (reading, use of language in functional contexts, listening); if there are more applicants than places a ranking is drawn up, and ties are broken by a B1 or higher certificate, the average mark and the English, Italian and maths marks of the first term of year 3 of lower secondary, then by lot. Sections have 28 to 30 students. Moving into a Cambridge section from another section is possible only after year 2, at the teachers' discretion. For foreign students recently arrived in Italy the liceo runs in-house Italian as a second language courses; the school has an individual plan template for foreign students.
Stages and year groups Grades 1-5 scuola secondaria di secondo grado. Five-year liceo scientifico on the Italian curriculum ending with the esame di Stato. Tracks: liceo scientifico di nuovo ordinamento (with options: extra physics, Liceo Matematico, biology with a biomedical focus) and liceo scientifico opzione scienze applicate (including an artificial intelligence strand); each track has one Cambridge section. The Cambridge course covers years 1-4, with one extra hour a week per subject with a native speaker: in years 1-2 IGCSE English as a Second Language and IGCSE Mathematics in both tracks, IGCSE Latin in the scientific liceo and IGCSE Global Perspectives in applied sciences; in years 3-4 AS Level English Literature in both tracks, AS Level Physics in the scientific liceo and AS Level Biology in applied sciences. IGCSE exams are taken at the liceo in May-June at the end of year 2 or in October-November at the start of year 3 (Latin at the end of year 3); the school strongly recommends them. AS Level exams are taken at the end of year 4 or the start of year 5, as decided by teachers for each student. The Cambridge section week is 30 hours in years 1-2 and 32 hours in years 3-4, against 27 and 30 in other sections. Marks in Cambridge subjects count towards the Italian subject mark.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

Cambridge · IGCSE, A-Level · authorised programme
The Cambridge register names the school as its centre; it teaches Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level. One Cambridge section per track prepares students for IGCSE in years 1-2 (English, maths, Latin or Global Perspectives) and for AS Level in years 3-4 (English literature, physics or biology).

What stands behind each entry

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16), A-Level (ages 16-18). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate. A-Level is the senior years, and their results are what British and many other universities admit on.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Reviews

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
