Los Sauces Pontevedra is the only site with a boarding house in the Los Sauces network of private bilingual schools. The school stands three kilometres from Pontevedra, on the road from Campañó to Cabaleiro, in the natural setting of the Rías Baixas, has room for 600 pupils and takes children from three up to the bachillerato. The residence has 84 places - about 20 per cent of the pupils; it has two floors, one for boys and one for girls, rooms for up to four by age and class, cleaning and laundry, five meals a day, a school doctor and private insurance, evening study hours with a tutor and weekend routes across Galicia to the families. Separately the school runs an International students programme: foreign pupils aged 13-17 study in Pontevedra, live in the residence and are looked after by the international department. Teaching is bilingual, with native English-speaking teachers; French or German is the second foreign language, and Chinese is a club. The network's international side: a month of study at its own Brook House Los Sauces centre in Bray near Dublin for the fifth and sixth years of primary and the first two years of ESO, an American dual diploma since the 2015/2016 school year, and exchanges with the United States, Canada and France. Against bullying the school runs the KiVa programme. The main thing a parent needs to know: the network does not yet hold the IB Diploma - the school is a candidate for the Diploma Programme, and it states itself that candidate status does not guarantee authorisation.

Admissions The school admits foreigners: the network has a separate International students programme for secondary pupils from other countries aged 13 to 17, and it runs at the Pontevedra site with accommodation in the residence, where the international department staff follow the pupils' studies, help them settle in and take them around Spain; the programme's emphasis is Spanish alongside the regular subjects. The school publishes no step-by-step admission procedure, no documents, no Spanish level requirement and no homologation rules. The school takes children from three up to the bachillerato, into 600 places, and into the boarding house's 84 places; every boarding applicant is assessed by the guidance department.
Stages and year groups Grades Educación Infantil (from age 3) - bachillerato. The school writes «oferta educativa de Educación Infantil, Primaria, Secundaria y Bachillerato, con una capacidad de 600 alumnos»; the boarding house is open to pupils from three up to the bachillerato. Lessons run from 9:00 to 16:45, and boarders have evening study with a tutor from 18:15 to 20:30. At the upper stage there is an American dual diploma alongside the Spanish bachillerato.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Los Saucesschool network

Los Sauces (Los Sauces Educational Institution) is a private school network that traces its history to October 1974, when it opened as a pre-school in Colonia El Viso, Madrid. The first Los Sauces private school opened in September 1981 in La Moraleja (Madrid), followed by the Torrelodones and Pontevedra schools in September 1991, Dublin in May 1992 and Vigo in September 1994. The site now lists five schools: four in Spain (La Moraleja, Torrelodones, Pontevedra, Vigo) and one in Ireland (Dublin). The network describes itself as non-denominational, apolitical and pluralist. It gives its experience differently on its own pages: "more than 40 years" on the Spanish page and "almost 40 years" on the English one. The network's site is colegiolossauces.com.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
