Los Sauces Torrelodones is the network's site in the north-west of Madrid, in the Los Peñascales urbanisation, in natural surroundings. The Los Sauces network began in October 1974 as a nursery school in Madrid's El Viso colony, and the Torrelodones school opened in September 1991; today the network has four schools in Spain and a centre in Bray near Dublin. The site takes children from the age of 1 and holds 1200 pupils. Teaching is bilingual, Spanish and English, with native-speaker teachers, and from the 4th year of primary school a second foreign language is added - French or German. Pupils in the 5th and 6th years of primary school and the 1st and 2nd years of ESO spend a month of the school year at the network's centre in Bray near Dublin. On top of the shared programme the site keeps artistic studies of its own - theatre, creative dance, flamenco and a choir with more than 15 years of history - and its theatre and assembly hall are let out. The network calls itself non-denominational, apolitical and pluralist, without distinction of race, sex or religion. The main thing a parent needs to know: the network does not yet hold the IB Diploma. Its own international programmes page said plainly: «El Colegio Los Sauces es un colegio de categoría solicitante* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme y desea obtener la autorización para ser un Colegio del Mundo del IB», with the organisation's caveat that applicant status does not guarantee authorisation.

Admissions The school does not set out an admissions procedure for this campus: its page carries a form for requesting information and booking a visit, and the network describes its programme in general terms on one site for all its schools. Torrelodones takes children from age 1 and has 1200 places. For the IB Diploma the network writes that there are no special requirements beyond those needed for the national bachillerato. The network does have a programme for foreign pupils, but not here: pupils aged 13-17 from any country outside Spain are taken at Pontevedra, living in the network's residence. The school publishes no deadlines, tests, documents or language requirements for Torrelodones.
Stages and year groups Grades Educación Infantil (from age 1) - baccalaureate. The school writes «imparte enseñanza de Educación Infantil (desde 1 año), Educación Primaria, Educación Secundaria y Bachillerato»; primary school runs from 6 to 12, ESO from 12 to 16 and the bachillerato from 16 to 18. From the 4th year of primary French or German is added, and the month of study in Bray near Dublin falls in the 5th and 6th years of primary and the 1st and 2nd years of ESO. The school gives no year-by-year list of grades and no timetable.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Los Saucesschool network

Los Sauces (Los Sauces Educational Institution) is a private school network that traces its history to October 1974, when it opened as a pre-school in Colonia El Viso, Madrid. The first Los Sauces private school opened in September 1981 in La Moraleja (Madrid), followed by the Torrelodones and Pontevedra schools in September 1991, Dublin in May 1992 and Vigo in September 1994. The site now lists five schools: four in Spain (La Moraleja, Torrelodones, Pontevedra, Vigo) and one in Ireland (Dublin). The network describes itself as non-denominational, apolitical and pluralist. It gives its experience differently on its own pages: "more than 40 years" on the Spanish page and "almost 40 years" on the English one. The network's site is colegiolossauces.com.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

Exams and destinations from the school's official website

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

Campus: A site in natural surroundings in the Los Peñascales urbanisation in the north-west of Madrid. The school has a theatre and assembly hall which it lets out, and artistic studies of its own. The kitchen is the school's own: the menu is drawn up every month by a dietitian doctor, allergies, coeliac disease, diabetes and medical diets are catered for, and the dining hall is supervised by the teachers themselves; lunch is optional. The school bus runs its own routes for Torrelodones, and children always travel with an escort from the school's staff. The school does not list the site's sports and teaching rooms in text.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
