Lycée français de Vienne was founded in 1946 by General Béthouart and celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2026. It is a French school of the AEFE network under direct management (établissement en gestion directe), from kindergarten to the final year: children aged 3 to 18, 1763 students of 90 nationalities. Lessons are taught in French; the school writes «le français, langue d’enseignement» (French is the language of instruction). German and French are compulsory for everyone from kindergarten, English from CM1. Under a cultural agreement between Austria and France, about 50 teachers from the Bildungsdirektion Wien teach German as a mother tongue, Austrian history and geography and religion; this is compulsory for Austrian students and open to others. Graduates take the French Baccalauréat or the Baccalauréat français international, and those who complete the full Austrian course can also take the Austrian Matura. In the 2025 Baccalauréat 100 percent passed and 95 percent passed with honours.

Lunch is compulsory from kindergarten to the end of collège: 1540 euros in maternelle, 1790 in elementary school, 1840 in collège and lycée. Fees are approved by the school board every year. French families can apply for AEFE scholarships through the consulate, and there is a solidarity fund for families in difficulty.
Admissions The school writes that «le LFV accueille des élèves de nombreuses nationalités» (the LFV welcomes students of many nationalities), and its students come from 90 nationalities. For children who do not speak French, from kindergarten to CM2, there is the EANA programme: the child joins a regular class for their age and has daily small-group French lessons with an FLSCO teacher. Enrolment is online through the EDUKA platform; the school asks for a parent's passport or ID card and a Meldezettel (Austrian residence registration); enrolment is confirmed once the non-refundable first registration fee is paid. The Austrian course in German is compulsory for students with Austrian citizenship.
Stages and year groups Grades Petite section - Terminale. Four schools in one («4 écoles en 1»): École maternelle for ages 3-6, École élémentaire for ages 6-10, Collège for ages 10-15, Lycée for ages 15-18, following the general track of the French Éducation nationale. Final diplomas: Baccalauréat français or Baccalauréat français international (BFI); the lycée has a German international section (Section internationale allemande) and a European section. The school writes that the Matura is open «pour les élèves de nationalité autrichienne» (for students of Austrian nationality), giving a double diploma; the Bildungsdirektion page says the Matura complémentaire is open to everyone who completed the full Austrian course in German. There is no IB programme.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

What stands behind each entry

AEFEAgency for French Education Abroad

It runs the network of French schools worldwide, while the accreditation itself, the homologation, is granted by the French education ministry and inspected by French state inspectors. A leaver from a homologated school moves into a school in France without an entrance examination. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

French programme

The state programme of France. A school is homologated by the French ministry of education, and a leaver may move into a school in France without entrance tests. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What this means for this school. Which year groups of this school are covered by homologation - only the primary ones, or all the way to the final year - is not stated here. The difference matters: it decides whether the school takes a child through to the French baccalaureate or hands them on to another school halfway.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
