The Lycée Jean Renoir in München is a French school of the AEFE network, founded in 1953, from kindergarten to the final year; more than 1200 children attend. The school has two campuses: kindergarten and primary in Giesing, collège and lycée in Sendling. French education ministry curricula are complemented by Bavarian curricula for German language, culture and civilisation. The primary school is recognised by Bavaria as an Ersatzschule, and the kindergarten is a private Kindergarten recognised by the city. Kindergarten and primary are bilingual on the principle of reciprocal immersion: each class has a French and a German teacher, half the lessons are in French and half in German, and history, geography and science are taught in German. English starts in grade 4, Spanish and Latin are optional in collège. The lycée offers four routes: the French baccalauréat, the AbiBac (the baccalauréat and the Abitur at once, recognised by the Bavarian ministry), the trilingual Baccalauréat Français International (French, American English, Spanish) since 2024, and the European English section. In 2025, 99% of graduates passed the baccalauréat and all passed the AbiBac. Tuition is fee-paying for all students.

Payment is by term (40%, 30%, 30%). Discounts: 20% for the third child, 25% for the fourth, 35% for the fifth and subsequent children. French families can receive an AEFE scholarship, deducted from the fees.
Admissions The school admits children of any nationality, and tuition is fee-paying for everyone. The kindergarten takes children from 2 years 10 months: first the child is registered in the city's Kita Finder, then an account is created on the school's Eduka platform; new students for primary, collège and lycée register through Eduka, and the class is set by year of birth. A medical examination is required before grade 1. Children who have never attended the French system get French as a language of schooling classes (FLSco); in grade 6 newcomers without German are taught intensively in a beginners' group. The AbiBac is chosen at the end of grade 9; the AbiBac and the European section cannot be combined. The registration fee is paid within 15 days of confirmation. French families living in the consular district can apply for an AEFE scholarship through the consulate general in München.
Stages and year groups Kindergarten (TPS, PS, MS, GS, from 2 years 10 months to 6) is bilingual: each class has a teacher and a German educator (Erzieherin), mornings are spent in groups of up to 12 children equally in French and German, afternoons on play and socialisation as in a German Kita. Primary CP-CM2 (grades 1-5 in the German system, Ersatzschule): half the lessons in French and half in German, history, geography and science in German, English from CM1. Collège 6e-3e (about a hundred students per year): 6 hours of German in level groups (beginners, German as a foreign language, German with German Gymnasium textbooks), 3 hours of English, optional Latin and Spanish from grade 7, optional history and geography in German (DNL), the ELCE English culture option in grades 8-9; exam: Diplôme national du brevet. Lycée seconde to terminale: specialities mathematics, physics-chemistry, SVT, geopolitics, SES, HLP, LLCE; the French baccalauréat, the AbiBac (German and history-geography in German, the Abitur awarded by the Bavarian ministry), the Baccalauréat Français International (since 2024), the European English section (SVT in English). Certificates: DSD I and II (free), Cambridge English B2 First and C1 Advanced (paid), DELE A2/B1 - language exams, not a Cambridge International programme. There is no IB.

What stands behind each entry

AEFEAgency for French Education Abroad

It runs the network of French schools worldwide, while the accreditation itself, the homologation, is granted by the French education ministry and inspected by French state inspectors. A leaver from a homologated school moves into a school in France without an entrance examination. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

French programme

The state programme of France. A school is homologated by the French ministry of education, and a leaver may move into a school in France without entrance tests. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What this means for this school. Which year groups of this school are covered by homologation - only the primary ones, or all the way to the final year - is not stated here. The difference matters: it decides whether the school takes a child through to the French baccalaureate or hands them on to another school halfway.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
