The Nymphenburger Schulen are a state-recognised (staatlich anerkannt) private all-day school in Gern, Munich: a Gymnasium, usually with four classes per grade, and a Realschule with one class per grade. The school was founded by the priest Ernst Adam, who in 1945 began teaching children left without a school in his own home; Gymnasium lessons began on 25 February 1946. The Gymnasium follows the Bavarian curriculum to the Abitur in a language track and a science and technology track, and the Realschule leads to the Mittlere Reife. Since 2012 the school has been IB-authorised: some students in grades 12-13 take both the Abitur and the IB Diploma, while others take individual IB subjects as Course Candidates. Regular lessons are in German, from grade 8 some subjects can be taken in English, and IB subjects are taught in English and German. Classes average 22 students, homework is mostly done at school, and afternoons include interest groups and clubs. The school accepts students from other countries and offers German as a foreign language for them.

About the fees Fees for the 2025-2026 school year are paid in 12 monthly instalments: grades 5-9 1062 EUR a month, 12744 EUR a year (lunch included); grades 10-13 958.50 EUR a month, 11502 EUR a year; the same for the Gymnasium and the Realschule. The amount combines the actual tuition and the annual school association membership fee of 1080 EUR minus the state subsidy; the school asks families to expect tuition to rise by about 3% a year. For gross income up to 80000 EUR and assets up to 75000 EUR the school association reduces fees on a sliding scale on application; the lowest fee is currently 4108.80 EUR a year, 342.40 EUR a month.
Admissions Families can apply at any time of the school year and for any grade: they call the school and arrange an interview with the child; copies of report cards for the last four years, a birth certificate, the vaccination record, a photo and exercise books are needed. As a state-recognised school, the Gymnasium admits under the rules for Bavarian state Gymnasien: entry to grade 5 requires an average grade of 2.33 or better, the Realschule 2.66 or better. The school says it gladly accepts students from other countries and from international schools: it helps them settle into the Bavarian system, provides German as a foreign or second language, and offers Advanced English and bilingual lessons to strong English speakers. Students apply to the IB programme in grade 11: report cards for grades 10 and 11 with an average of 2.5 or better, a one-page statement in English, evidence of extracurricular activities and, for external candidates, a teacher's recommendation; then an interview with the IB coordinator. Grades count 70%, extracurricular commitment 20% and the quality of the application 10%.
Stages and year groups Grades 5-13. Gymnasium following the Bavarian G9 curriculum (grades 5-13) with two tracks: language (English from grade 5, Latin or French from grade 6, Spanish from grade 8) and science and technology (English, then Latin or French); in grade 11 students can start Chinese or Spanish. The outcome is the Abitur. Since 2012, in grades 12-13 (Q12, Q13) some students take the IB Diploma Programme alongside the Abitur: German A Literature HL, English Language and Literature HL, English B HL, History SL, Global Politics SL, Biology HL, Physics HL, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches SL, Film SL, plus TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS; since 2024 students can take at least two IB subjects as Course Candidates. The Realschule (grades 5-10) has business, language (French) and design tracks and leads to the Mittlere Reife.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
