Lyngby Friskole is a state-subsidised private school (friskole) in Kongens Lyngby north of Copenhagen, from the reception class (grade 0) to grade 9, with an after-school club (SFO) for grades 0-3. It was founded in 1975 by parents and teacher Poul Sørensen as P-75 skolen; since 1983 it has been on Gammel Bagsværdvej, since 2007 it has been called Lyngby Friskole, and in 2025 it celebrated 50 years. The school follows the aims of the Danish folkeskole and leads students to the grade 9 exams (without the religion exam), with an art exam in grade 8. English is taught from grade 0 and German from grade 5; since 2015 the school has been a Cambridge Associate School, and in grade 9 all students take Cambridge English as a Second Language in English, with the exam optional. In grade 8 there is a compulsory exchange with a bilingual school in Breukelen in the Netherlands, and in grade 9 a study trip abroad. Classes are small; from grade 0 to 6 there is a weekly culture day with museums and theatres, swimming in grade 3, and Alkalær reading sessions for those who need them.

About the fees From 1 August 2026 tuition is 1887 DKK per month, 12 payments a year (August to July); the second, third and fourth child get a 15% discount. The after-school club (SFO) for grades 0-3 costs 806 DKK per month 12 times a year, or 685 DKK for siblings. The compulsory grade 9 study trip costs no more than two months' fees, and parents pay for camps in the lower grades. The school names no different prices for families with or without a Danish CPR number.
Admissions If a place is free in a class, parents and child come for a talk with the head and a tour; before enrolment the child spends about two weeks in the class on trial, and is then enrolled if the school and parents agree. For grade 0 admission takes place in autumn: after an information meeting families fill in the application on the website and are invited to interviews in the order applications are received; the school asks for reports from the kindergarten and from specialists. The class is formed taking into account time on the waiting list, a balance of boys and girls and a homogeneous group; siblings of current students are interviewed on equal terms but given priority. If there is no place, the child goes on the waiting list. The application asks whether the child is bilingual; by enrolling their child, parents accept the school's aims and values.
Stages and year groups Grades 0-9. Reception class (grade 0) and grades 1-9 following the aims of the Danish folkeskole: lower years 0-3, middle years 4-6, upper years 7-9. Grade 9 exams (FP9) follow the folkeskole plan without the religion exam, with an art exam in grade 8. Cambridge: since 2015 the school has been a Cambridge Associate School; in grade 9 students add the international subject Cambridge English as a Second Language to their subjects, taught and examined in English; the subject is compulsory for all grade 9 students, the Cambridge exam is optional and has a fee, and leads to a Cambridge certificate. The word IGCSE does not appear on the website. The core curriculum is Danish.

What stands behind each entry

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

The yard has swings, a climbing frame, a sandpit with a playhouse, a basketball and football cage and an outdoor table tennis table. The after-school club is open from 7:15 to 17:00 (until 16:00 on Fridays). Lunch can be ordered from SundSkolemad. Swimming in grade 3 is at the Lyngby Idrætsby pool.

The student council includes all grades except grade 0. Every year an independent supervisor chosen by the parents checks that teaching meets folkeskole standards, and the reports are published on the website.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
