Scuola Italiana Internazionale Bucarest «Aldo Moro» continues the tradition of the Italian school in Bucharest that existed from the 1880s until 1948. The current school was set up in 1975 as an association of Italian families linked to the embassy and consulate, took the name Aldo Moro in 1978, and since 2007 has been part of the Liberi di Educare group of Italian schools. The primary school, lower secondary school and four-year language liceo (liceo linguistico) are Italian paritaria schools abroad: they follow the Italian state curriculum, and graduates sit the esame di Stato at the school. The kindergarten from age 3 operates privately, without paritaria status. Lessons are mainly in Italian; Romanian language, Romanian history and geography are taught in Romanian, English from grade 1 with 4 lessons a week, and some subjects are taught in English together with the group's London school. Students are Italian, Romanian, Italian-Romanian and of other nationalities. Since 2023 the school has been housed in a restored 1930s mansion in central Bucharest.

Admissions Children can enrol at any time during the school year if places are available and their profile meets the school's criteria; the first step is a meeting request via the website. On enrolment the school may suggest an initial assessment to see whether the child needs support in Italian. For kindergarten: a visit, an interview with the kindergarten head, the enrolment contract, birth and vaccination certificates and the parents' identity documents; the place is secured only after the enrolment fee is paid. Italian, Romanian, Italian-Romanian children and children of other nationalities attend. The school welcomes children with difficulties, including psychological and social ones, and involves support teachers.
Stages and year groups Italian track: scuola primaria (grades I-V, ages 6-11), secondaria di primo grado (I-III, equivalent to Romanian VI-VIII) and liceo linguistico quadriennale (four years, ages 14-18) - paritaria under decree 4815/0565 of 4 July 2023; the original recognition of the primary and middle school was D.M. 267/5963 of 19.11.2007. The liceo esame di Stato takes place at the school and leads to a fully valid Italian diploma. The kindergarten from age 3 (the younger Primavera group is admitted if places allow) operates in the private system, without paritaria status, in Italian and Romanian. Romanian language, history and geography are taught in Romanian, and the school says students can re-enter the Romanian system immediately. The 2026-2027 documents also include a textbook list for grades 1-3 of a Liceo Scienze Applicate.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

MAECI
Italy's foreign ministry names the school on its list of paritarie Italian schools abroad: it teaches the Italian curriculum, and Italy recognises its exams and diploma on a par with state schools. Parity is recognised for the primary school, the scuola media and the liceo linguistico; the kindergarten runs as a private one without parity.

What stands behind each entry

MAECIItaly's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI)

An Italian school abroad: a state or paritaria school, the Italian curriculum, the esame di Stato exam and a diploma with the same legal value as in Italy.

What the badge means for this school. This is an Italian school abroad: it teaches the Italian curriculum, and Italy's foreign ministry names it on its list of state or paritarie schools - so Italy recognises its exams and diploma. The entry is not a quality inspection. Which stages are recognised and what the school charges are on this page and on the school's own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

Italian programme

The Italian school curriculum taught in Italian: scuola dell'infanzia, primaria, secondaria di primo grado (scuola media) and the liceo, ending with the state exam, the esame di Stato, and the Italian diploma.

What this means for this school. The curriculum is set by the Italian state: the school is an Italian state school abroad or a paritaria school, recognised by Italy. Exams follow Italian rules and the diploma has the same legal value as in Italy, giving access to Italian universities. The host country's curriculum usually runs alongside, and students receive two certificates.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
