St. George Barcelona is a private British school in the Sarrià district of upper Barcelona, for children from 2 to 18. The school belongs to the International Schools Partnership (ISP) group. Teaching follows the English National Curriculum: the infant school follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, primary and secondary follow the English curriculum with IGCSE exams, and the last two years follow the IB Diploma Programme. All subjects are taught in English by English-speaking teachers, except Spanish, Catalan and French, which are taught by native speakers; Spanish begins at age 4, Catalan at 6, French from Year 7, and Chinese is offered as a club. Spanish and Catalan with social sciences are compulsory, as Catalonia requires. The school says that 40 per cent of its pupils are Spanish and the rest come from other countries, more than 60 nationalities in all. The school is not religious. The head is Kate Carr. Lessons run from 9:15 to 16:15, clubs until 17:15, with a breakfast club from 8:00. Pupils take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award up to Gold, Model United Nations and ISP international programmes.

Admissions The school welcomes both local and international families: admission is open all year, up to Year 9 pupils can join in the middle of the school year, families abroad can have an online meeting and multilingual support, and newcomers get a buddy-family system. The steps: an enquiry, a visit or online meeting, a trial day or online interview with a request for the previous school report, then a written offer of a place, with 5-7 days to confirm it. Not speaking English, the school says, is no obstacle: the youngest learn through full immersion, and from Year 2 every child is tested in English and given extra support where needed.
Stages and year groups Grades Pre-Nursery (age 2) - Year 13. Pre-Nursery for two-year-olds, Nursery and Reception from 3 to 5 on the EYFS, primary Year 1-6 (ages 5-11), secondary Year 7-11 (ages 11-16) with IGCSE exams and the IB Diploma Programme in Year 12 and 13 (ages 16-18). The IB has six subject groups: English A, Spanish A, English B, Spanish B, French B, Spanish ab initio; business management, psychology, global politics; biology, chemistry, physics, environmental systems and societies, computer science, sports science; two mathematics courses; visual arts and theatre. Two- and three-year-olds have an hour's nap a day.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

PearsonPearson Edexcel, a British exam board

It gives a school approved centre status: that means Pearson exams can be sat in the school itself. What is checked is the premises, the equipment, the secure storage of papers and the presence of trained invigilators.

What the badge means for this school. The school can run Pearson exams on its own premises. The status says nothing about teaching, about results or about the school itself: any school able to run an exam securely holds it. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. Which Pearson qualifications this school is approved for is not stated here.

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.

MSAMiddle States Association of Colleges and Schools

One of the oldest American accreditations, working since 1887 in more than a hundred countries and linked to the Office of Overseas Schools of the US State Department. It judges the school as an institution across twelve areas, including finances, governance, premises and student support.

What the badge means for this school. The school is a candidate for accreditation by this organisation: the route has been started but not completed. Candidacy speaks of an application made and a file accepted for consideration, not of the outcome of an inspection, and the organisations themselves usually require schools to say that it does not guarantee accreditation. The candidacy is confirmed in the organisation's open directory.

International Schools Partnershipschool network

A group of private international schools, founded in 2013 by five leaders from international education. The numbers diverge: the home page gives 121 schools in 26 countries and "132,000+" pupils, the "About us" page - 106 schools in 25 countries, the "Who and where we are" page - 121 schools in more than 26 markets and 118,000 pupils. The site writes that schools keep their own character, brand and curriculum when they join ISP, but does not say whether ISP buys the schools, manages them under contract or brings them together by membership.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
