Tegelviken is a municipal compulsory school (grundskola) of Eskilstuna municipality in the village of Kvicksund on Lake Mälaren, on the border of Södermanland and Västmanland. The building dates from 1998 and was designed on ecological principles. The school describes itself as calm and safe with good results: many students finish Year 9 with an average of over 300 merit points. Tegelviken is a practice school for teacher training students and, in its own words, has long had an international orientation with various joint projects; it holds an annual charity market for Bangladesh. In years 8-9 the school offers Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language. Otherwise teaching follows the Swedish compulsory school curriculum; the language of instruction is Swedish, as follows from the Swedish curriculum and the fact that all the school's pages are in Swedish only.

About the fees Tuition is free: this is a municipal school of Eskilstuna municipality, and neither the school's nor the municipality's pages mention tuition fees. Pupils in the open club for years 4-6 get a free snack; all students registered in the municipality get a free school bus card for four journeys a day.
Admissions Places in Eskilstuna's municipal compulsory schools are allocated by the municipality: parents apply for a school place and then for a fritidshem place; school changes are possible in the November transfer period. Families newly arrived in Sweden with children aged 6 to 19 are received by the municipal unit Välkomsten ('Vi tar emot dig som är ny i Sverige och som har barn mellan 6 och 19 år'), which assesses the child's previous schooling with Skolverket's mandatory materials and helps them into Swedish school. Children with another mother tongue can take mother tongue lessons.
Stages and year groups Municipal grundskola following the Swedish compulsory school curriculum, with a fritidshem for younger pupils and an open club for years 4-6. In years 8-9 the school offers Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language ('Tegelviken erbjuda Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language i årskurs 8-9'), a Cambridge International course; the school does not say whether it is compulsory or whether students sit the exam. It mentions no other Cambridge courses (Primary, Lower Secondary, other IGCSEs).

CambridgeCambridge International Education
Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: IGCSE (ages 14-16). IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.
Register to check for yourself, and the full guide →National programme
The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.
What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Campus: The school is in the village of Kvicksund on Lake Mälaren, about 20 kilometres north-west of Eskilstuna, and was built in 1998 on ecological principles: playgrounds in a natural setting ('naturlek'), an earth cellar and a schoolyard where the fritidshem plays outdoors every afternoon, with a shed of play equipment. Its own kitchen cooks breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack every day and caters for special diets and allergies. There is a fritidshem with two sections (Byn and Båten) before and after school and an open club for years 4-6 with a free afternoon snack.

The student health team: school leaders, special needs educators and teachers, a counsellor and a school nurse, and a careers adviser; an action programme of support is drawn up when needed. The school's work rests on the vision that all students should succeed and the rule that what is said about one another should be 'snällt, sant och nödvändigt' (kind, true and necessary); school rules are applied against all forms of degrading treatment, and disciplinary measures are used when safety and calm in lessons are threatened.
Reviews
No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
