Vauban is the largest French school in Luxembourg: about 2600 pupils from age 3 to Terminale, 112 classes, pupils of nearly 50 nationalities. The current school was formed in 2017 by merging École française de Luxembourg (founded 1993) and Lycée Vauban (founded 1984), and moved to its new Cloche d'Or campus the same year. It is a private non-profit school run by a parents' association, accredited by the French Ministry of Education and an AEFE partner school. Teaching is in French on the French curriculum: maternelle, élémentaire, collège with the DNB and lycée with the general bac and the STMG technological track. Languages are a priority: English and Luxembourgish from maternelle, German or Luxembourgish from CP, a British international section from CM1, German and British international sections from 6e to Terminale, the BFI diploma, and pupils in the German BFI track also receive the German Abitur. Language of instruction is inferred from the programme descriptions: all levels follow French programmes, and the school presents English, German and other languages as subjects and additional sections. Nurse and two psychologists on site every day, an anti-bullying listening unit, phones locked in pouches during the school day.

Petite Section takes children who are 3 by 1 September. The child's legal residence must be in Luxembourg by the start of the school year; other cases are considered if places remain. Applications are online and reviewed by spring admission panels.

Accreditations and programmes verified against official registries

AEFE · accreditationZfA · language examinationPASCH · takes part in the programme
The AEFE register gives the school partenaire status; the school says it is accredited by the French Ministry of Education from maternelle to baccalauréat. ZfA lists it as a school with a German language profile (DPS), and it is a PASCH school.

What stands behind each entry

AEFEAgency for French Education Abroad

It runs the network of French schools worldwide, while the accreditation itself, the homologation, is granted by the French education ministry and inspected by French state inspectors. A leaver from a homologated school moves into a school in France without an entrance examination. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

ZfACentral Agency for German Schools Abroad

A German federal agency. It recognises a school as a German school abroad, funds it and grants the right to award the German leaving certificate. Quality is examined by a state inspection about once every six years, and schools that pass receive the mark of an excellent German school abroad.

What the badge means for this school. The organisation grants the school the right to prepare pupils for its language examination and to sit it. That is all the entry says: the examination covers one subject, the other subjects follow whatever curriculum the school works to, and no inspection of the school as a whole stands behind it. The diploma is real and the register is public, so the entry is shown - but on its own it does not bring a school into the ranking, by the same measure as an examination centre. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

PASCHSchools: Partners for the Future, an initiative of the German foreign ministry

More than two thousand schools in about 120 countries. A school cannot apply for itself: participants are chosen by German agencies in agreement with the embassy. Very different schools sit under one mark - full German schools abroad, and ordinary national schools that simply teach German well.

What the badge means for this school. The school belongs to a German support programme. By itself the mark means neither a German curriculum nor the right to award a German certificate: of the two thousand PASCH schools, about seventeen hundred hold no such right. Look for a ZfA status next to it - that is the one that is about this. The entry is confirmed in the organisation's open directory.

French programme

The state programme of France. A school is homologated by the French ministry of education, and a leaver may move into a school in France without entrance tests. Homologation is granted stage by stage, so it sometimes covers only part of the year groups.

What this means for this school. Which year groups of this school are covered by homologation - only the primary ones, or all the way to the final year - is not stated here. The difference matters: it decides whether the school takes a child through to the French baccalaureate or hands them on to another school halfway.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
