British International School of Zagreb stands on a closed campus in Zagreb's Šestine: 25,000 square metres of greenery, park and grounds, a school building, two sports halls, a swimming pool, a gym, a laboratory for chemistry, physics and biology, robotics and technical design rooms, a music room, a computer room with a games area and a virtual reality corner, a study area of 200 square metres and a boarding house of 52 rooms of 28 square metres with their own bathrooms. The school grew out of the private primary school Kreativan razvoj, opened in 1995; it opened its British stage in 2013 for the primary grades and in 2014 for the middle ones, and takes students from Nursery to Year 13 with Cambridge IGCSE and A-level at the end. There is one class per year, and the school gives class size as two different numbers: in its questions section, no more than eighteen students; on the founder's and the principal's pages, up to fifteen. Lessons are in English, Croatian is added in the lower grades, and from the third year the school teaches German, Italian and Croatian as subjects; boarders are taken from 13 to 19 years old. Of its leavers the school says that all were admitted to the faculty of their first choice, and it names Harvard, Cambridge, London School of Economics, Edinburgh, Bocconi, Melbourne and Tsinghua. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are included in the fees, boarders also get dinner, the food is cooked on site, halal dishes are available, and the journey to school remains the family's own concern.

About the fees The annual fees are published by stage on the “Fees and charges” page: the pre-school stage (Nursery and Reception) 7,500 EUR, primary school Years 1-6 - 14,500, the middle years Years 7-9 - 16,000, the upper stage Years 10-11 and 12-13 - 18,000 EUR. Boarding for a full year costs 32,500 EUR for a single room and 30,500 for a double, and in that sum the school includes tuition, accommodation with cleaning, all meals, laundry of the uniform and activities on campus. Payment is due in full on enrollment; for enrollment for a single semester 70 per cent of the annual sum is charged. Fees are not refunded, the school charges 100 EUR for a reminder about an overdue payment, and it asks for six months' written notice of a student's departure. The daily journey to school is not included in the fees.
Admissions The school looks at previous schooling and language level, and on the results of its assessment it may place a child in a different class or a different year. The order is this: contacting the school and arranging a visit, a first meeting with a tour given by the principal, the head of school or a coordinator, a second meeting for which the school asks for the report cards of the last two years, then testing - in the primary school standardised testing in reading and mathematics with the primary coordinator, in the middle school by subject. The child is offered a day in class with the teachers and students. Once the family agrees, parents receive the contract in three copies and pay the enrollment fee. The documents are: application forms and school records for two years, confidential references from the previous school (the school requests them itself), official translations of the records into English, a copy of the passport and birth certificate, medical information with vaccinations, valid medical insurance and a residence permit. Boarders are taken from 13 to 19 years old regardless of sex, origin or religion. The whole programme is in English, and other languages the school gives as electives.

In the primary school literacy and mathematics come every day and science three times a week; a foreign language begins in Year 3, and Croatian language and culture in Year 2 for foreign students.

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

International Primary Curriculum: a British primary school programme for children aged 5 to 11. It teaches through themes that draw subjects together rather than through separate subjects; it is published by the International Curriculum Association, formerly Fieldwork Education.
What this means for this school. This is a programme for the primary stage, not an accreditation of the school: the organisation sells it to schools and trains their teachers, but it does not check the quality of teaching at a particular school and keeps no public register of the schools working to it. Its own summer school at the end of the school year, in June, on the campus at Dedići 102, with trips around Zagreb: lessons and activities in the school's indoor and outdoor spaces. Physical safety the school describes through regular emergency drills, going through the Croatian traffic rules and the laws on the protection of minors, and teaching the rules of the campus. Emotional safety - through clear rules, professional staff and open communication. Care in the boarding house rests with the boarding staff: they deal with birthdays, religious holidays, family circumstances, schoolwork, relations between the children, illness, growing up and cases of bullying. Of an illness, a breach of behaviour or an incident the school promises to tell parents at once. The school names no separate child protection policy, medical room or psychologist.
