The founders, Hadiye and Hayati Çakır, began as teachers of mathematics and science in state schools, opened a tutoring centre in 1989 and have run a school since 1993. From the start the programme carried things then absent from Turkish school plans: English, computing, sports and art workshops and an open breakfast for students. The school calls its approach the Çakır school of thought, a competence-based model in which the student works and the teacher guides. Each level has a guidance and counselling unit, a coordinator system and subject heads responsible for lesson planning and teacher feedback.

The exam for a course is set and marked by the College Board, not by the school. A good result is counted by American universities as a first-year course already passed, which saves a student time and money.
