The only international school in Maribor works inside a state primary school, Osnovna šola Leona Štuklja, in the quiet Nova vas district at the foot of Pohorje: about ten minutes from the city centre, with a doctor, a pharmacy and the police nearby. The international section opened in September 2023 and runs two programmes back to back - the primary years and the first three years of the middle years, from kindergarten to Grade 8, for children from 3 to 13 years old; for 2026/27 the youngest group is being enrolled from the age of four. Subjects are taught in English, while Slovene, German or French is taken as a foreign language, so no knowledge of Slovene is required on entry. The school publishes a five-stage order of priority for enrolment, and the first stage is the children of foreign nationals working in Slovenia; there is no entrance examination and no points competition, and the application is sent by post. Tuition is charged, but the school does not state how much: the fees section of the site has been set up and left empty, and the only known obligation is to pay a sum equal to one month's fee as a deposit at registration. The team is small and named person by person, with each teacher's subjects and extracurricular club listed; the school has a newly refurbished sports hall, a computer room with 23 places, a home economics room, its own kitchen and dining room, and around it a large green yard with an outdoor classroom, a sensory path, a rock garden and a school vegetable garden.

About the fees Tuition is charged, but the school does not publish the amount: the fees page in the international school section has been set up and contains only the heading "Tuition fees", without a single figure. The only monetary condition stated in the school's own words is the deposit on enrolment: for the registration to take effect the school must receive a sum equal to one month's fee, and it holds that sum as a deposit against the last month of the school year - or the last month of attendance, if the child leaves in the middle of the year. So there is a monthly fee, and its size is not stated.
Admissions Enrolment is open, with no entrance examination and no points competition, but with an order of priority by category. The school publishes "Entry requirements for a public school running an international education programme" in five stages. The first: "The children of foreign diplomatic, economic and other representatives may enrol in the International School programme if they provide evidence of this with the relevant documents. Children may enrol in the international school programme based on a valid passport, a certificate from the school attended by the child in the last year before enrolment and other relevant documents showing that the child's parents are foreign nationals working in the Republic of Slovenia". Then come the children of Slovene diplomats who have lived abroad for at least two years; exceptionally, the children of Slovene citizens who have spent the last four years abroad; children facing a long move abroad; and the fifth, open stage - other children of Slovene and foreign nationals who set out their reasons for enrolling in a school with an international programme. The conditions are reviewed every year. Documents for everyone: a completed application form for the kindergarten, primary or middle years programme, academic records for the previous school year, a copy of the passport or identity card page with the photograph, and a recent medical certificate. A completed course of Slovene schooling is not required, and admission directly from a school abroad is provided for. Applications are sent to international.school@os-leon.si. Enrolment for 2026/27: Early Years - ages 4 and 5, Primary Years - ages 6-10, Middle Years - ages 11-13. The school does not publish the size of its annual intake.
Stages and year groups Grades Kindergarten - Grade 8 (Early Years, PYP 1-5, MYP 1-3). The international section opened in September 2023 and runs the programme from kindergarten to the third year of the middle years, that is to Grade 8: "offering educational programmes from kindergarten to Middle Years Programme Grade 3 (8th), for children and adolescents from 3 to 13 years old". The stages are called Early Years, Primary Years and Middle Years. The international section has no Grade 9 and no upper secondary, so after that a child moves on to another school. The state primary school inside which the section lives runs the ordinary Slovene nine-year programme in three triads.

The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible.

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.
What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Campus: The school stands in the quiet Nova vas district at the foot of Pohorje, about ten minutes from the centre of Maribor, reachable by car or by bus number 18. The grounds are green and surrounded by trees, meadows and a stream. The yard is large and includes an outdoor classroom, a sensory path, a rock garden and a school vegetable garden. Outside there are basketball and football courts, and there is a newly refurbished sports hall. Each group has its own classroom with a computer and a projector; for sport, the natural sciences and computing the children go to separate specialist rooms. The computer room is a laboratory with 23 machines and internet access. There is a home economics room for lessons involving cooking. The school's own kitchen prepares breakfast, a snack and lunch, and lunch is served in the school dining room. The library holds 10 000 items of books and non-book materials and 35 periodical titles, the collection is updated every month and catalogued in the COBISS system; up to four books are lent for two weeks. Next to the school there is a skate park and a large playground, and fifteen minutes' walk away the "Železničar" tennis club, a BMX track and an athletics stadium.

✓CounsellorThe school counselling service: Milena Grudnik, a teacher of pedagogy, available to students and parents every day from 8:00 to 13:00 and on every second Thursday of the month from 15:30 to 18:30. Additional professional support under formal decisions is provided by visiting special education teachers, a pedagogue and a psychologist; a remedial specialist advises teachers on working with children with special needs.
