AMADEUS International School Vienna opened in 2012 with fewer than 30 students in a single building, Ignaz Semmelweis House, on the grounds of the former Semmelweis Clinic in the 18th district. Today it has about 450 students from 70 countries, 65 of them boarders; the school calls itself the only international boarding school in Vienna. English is the "official language of instruction". German is compulsory for all students from Grade 1 to Grade 10, with no prior knowledge required; the IB Diploma offers English, German, Russian, Spanish and Chinese. The school's own Music & Arts Academy (AMAA) runs music, art and dance programmes at three levels for its students only, and there is a separate IB Career-related Programme in music. The school gained its IB programmes step by step: DP in 2014, PYP and MYP in 2016, CP in 2021.

Admissions "AMADEUS Vienna welcomes applications from students aged three to 18 regardless of gender, ethnicity, race, religion, and physical abilities" (ages 3 to 18), provided the child's needs can be met in a mainstream classroom. Decisions combine age, prior academic performance, teacher references and an interview with the Head of Section; primary applicants have a trial day, secondary applicants take the General Admissions Test, an interview and a trial day or trial boarding stay. English levels: native or near-native for Early Years and Grade 1, at least B1 for Grades 2-5, B1-B2 for Grades 6-10, at least B2 for Grades 11-12; students below these levels join the paid EAL programme. For Grade 1 a child must be 6 by 1 September. The school keeps a soft target of no more than 20% of any one nationality per class. Applicants from non-EU countries are advised to allow at least 4 months for the Austrian visa; boarders must use the school's residence-permit service, while day students' parents handle the permit themselves. Applications are accepted all year.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19), CP (ages 16-19, with a vocational slant). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate. CP is the final stage with a vocational slant, ages 16 to 19: some of the DP subjects plus an applied qualification. It is meant for those heading into a trade or an applied degree rather than an academic one.

It accredits international schools and is a paying association at the same time. It examines governance and ownership, the curriculum, teaching, student wellbeing, staff and premises; a team of volunteers from other CIS accredited schools visits the school. Membership and accreditation are different things here, and schools confuse them more often than anything else.
What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

One of the oldest American accreditations, working since 1887 in more than a hundred countries and linked to the Office of Overseas Schools of the US State Department. It judges the school as an institution across twelve areas, including finances, governance, premises and student support.
What the badge means for this school. The school is a candidate for accreditation by this organisation: the route has been started but not completed. Candidacy speaks of an application made and a file accepted for consideration, not of the outcome of an inspection, and the organisations themselves usually require schools to say that it does not guarantee accreditation. The candidacy is confirmed in the organisation's open directory.

Reviews
No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
