BIS City Campus is the city site of the Bavarian International School in Munich-Schwabing, with an early childhood centre from age 3 and a primary school for grades 1-5; the school's main campus with middle and high school is in Haimhausen (it has a separate card). The campus opened in 2017 and follows the IB Primary Years Programme: children learn through inquiry-based transdisciplinary units, and in early childhood through play. The language of instruction is English, and no prior English is needed: young children pick up the language through play, and grades 1-5 have language development classes. German is taught five periods a week and through team teaching in class. More than 300 children from 40 countries attend, cared for by more than 50 staff from 30 countries; classes are small and the atmosphere is family-like. The school is one of 25 Positive Discipline Lab Schools in the world. After grade 5 children continue in the secondary school in Haimhausen, served by an express bus from the city centre.

About the fees Fees for 2026-2027 are the same as on the main campus: Early Childhood 18500 EUR per year, grades 1-5 18530 EUR per year. Fees can be paid at once, in two instalments (plus 2%) or in ten monthly instalments (plus 4%); discounts are 10% for the third and 15% for the fourth child. The income-based Fee Reduction Programme applies to grades 1-5. After school care and holiday camps run by the partner Play2Learn are charged separately.
Admissions Admission to the City Campus early childhood centre and grades 1-5 follows the general BIS process year-round: an online application, a 200 EUR fee, trial guest days, a German screening for German-speaking children, and an admissions committee decision usually within 10 working days. Grade placement is by age on 30 September. The City Campus has its own admissions officer and open days (in 2026-2027 on 2 December, 28 January and 25 February). When places are limited, children of expat families come first, then siblings of current students, then local German families. Prior English is not required, nor is German.
Stages and year groups The Early Childhood Centre (kindergarten and pre-school from age 3) and primary grades 1-5 follow the IB Primary Years Programme: transdisciplinary inquiry units combining languages, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, physical education and personal development; there are no traditional grades in primary school, and progress is shared via Seesaw, portfolios, conferences and report cards. German is taught five periods a week; the Home Language Programme supports 17 languages. The middle and high school (MYP, DP, CP) are only on the Haimhausen campus.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
